The Paralympians whose success put Great Britain second in the medals table last night have generally had substantial time to adapt to disabilities. Yet the team's star of the day swam to gold, in a Paralympic record time, just two years after having her right leg amputated below the knee. Alice Tai had both legs when she secured bronze at the Rio Paralympics, as a 17-year-old. But living with relentless pain in the stunted limb and in the wrist tendons damaged by her need for a crutch was an infernal struggle.
