Jan Choinski battled a cold and 30°C heat, but fell just short of recording the first British victory at this US Open. The qualifier trailed by two sets and a break against world No 55 Roberto Carballes Baena and it looked an awfully long way back. But Choinski forced a fifth set before going down 6-2, 6-3, 5-7, 6-7, 6-3 to the Spaniard. 'When I played the second round of qualifying I started to get an itchy throat and it developed into a full blown cold,' said the 28-year-old, the German-born son of an English mother and Polish father.
