As she embarked on her last run of the first day, Katarina Johnson-Thompson might have been forgiven a few painful flashbacks. But this was not an evening for ruptures, wheelchairs and the dark thoughts of Olympics past. Instead, she stepped onto the blocks for the 200m, that same discipline where it all unravelled so horribly in Tokyo, and sped away towards something improbable and cautiously exciting. Which is to say she surged past the field, beyond the apex of the bend where her calf snapped in Japan, and out clear at the top of the heptathlon standings.
