On September 1 in 2001, led by the late Sven-Goran Eriksson, the England men's national team enjoyed one of their greatest ever nights. After losing on penalties to Germany at both Italia '90 and Euro '96, England travelled to Munich to face their old rivals again, this time in a World Cup qualifier. Germany were the clear group leaders, having beaten England 1-0 in the last ever game before the demolition of the old Wembley Stadium 11 months earlier.
