Gary Lineker was 'open' to staying on as the £1.35million-a-year host of Match of the Day but the BBC did not offer him a contract in a move that will save them a fortune, it was revealed today. The footballer turned pundit, 63, has been the regular host of the show since 1999 but he will end his 25-year stint on the Saturday night programme at the end of this season.
