England have waded into depressingly familiar territory at the start of their annual jaunt to the Caribbean, showing that whatever the personnel and format, they cannot cope on pitches that are less than pristine. Yes, there were mitigating circumstances for the eight-wicket hiding to West Indies in the early hours of Friday morning - they travelled here without half a dozen players guaranteed to be in their best one-day XI, including injured captain Jos Buttler, and had the worst of the conditions after losing the toss - but the abject batting display highlighted their frailties whenever a surface is sluggish or offers turn.
