Legendary NFL official Dale Hamer dies at 87
Long-time NFL official Dale Hamer has died at the age of 87, it has been announced. Hamer - who worked more than 400 games in the NFL, including 20 playoff fixtures and two Super Bowls - passed away peacefully on Friday. The California State College graduate started off as a head linesman in 1978 before being promoted to a referee 11 years later. In 1995 he left that role while battling a heart condition, which was diagnosed as aortic stenosis and calcification of his heart valve.
