SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from the Tuesday, Sept. 30 episode of "Dancing With the Stars."

Following the first elimination of the season — a double elimination, no less — the "Dancing With the Stars" competition continues to heat up. During this week, the partners danced to songs best known for dominating on TikTok. For the social media mavens on the cast, namely "Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" stars Jen Affleck and Whitney Leavitt and massive social media star Alix Earle, it seemed the perfect theme.

It was also the perfect week for Season 31 winner, social media creator Charli d'Amelio, to come back for a few performances — one with the troupe for a routine to Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage" and one with her former partner, Mark Ballas, to "Assumptions" by Sam Gellaitry.

After each routine, Lauren Jauregui and Andy Richter were tied at the bottom of the leaderboard, with Whitney Leavitt and Jordan Chiles tied at the top. Despite a low score, it was still a major shock when Lauren — who has a giant fan base — was eliminated. Inside the ballroom was an audible gasp, with everyone looking around at each other, completely shocked and emotional.

When asked how she was feeling, the Fifth Harmony singer responded, "Pissed." She then turned to partner Brandon Armstrong and added, "I'm so grateful to have had you as a partner."

(Reuters) -Vancouver-based Lithium Americas said on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has taken a 5% stake in the company, along with a separate 5% stake in its Thacker Pass lithium project joint venture with General Motors.

While the total deal value was not disclosed, Lithium Americas confirmed it has finalized an agreement with the DOE to initiate the first $435 million draw from a previously announced $2.26 billion loan to support development of the Thacker Pass site.

It will be the latest private sector investment by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration after recent stakes in Intel and MP Materials, seeking to boost industries seen as vital to U.S. national security.

Last week, Reuters reported that administration officials were in discussions with Lithium Americas about an equity stake as they renegotiated terms of a $2.26 billion government loan for the Nevada-based mine, which is slated to become the largest source of battery metal lithium in the Western Hemisphere.

Representatives for GM were not immediately available to comment.

GM, which invested $625 million in the mine last year for a 38% stake, has the right to buy all of the project's lithium from its first phase and a portion from the second phase for 20 years.

Administration officials had initially sought a guarantee that GM would buy the metal regardless of market conditions, a request the automaker pushed back on and which led to the equity stake request, Reuters previously reported.

The Thacker Pass project has long been touted by both Republicans and Democrats as a key way to boost U.S. critical minerals production and cut reliance on China, the world's largest lithium processor.

China plays a dominant role in the global lithium supply chain, producing more than 40,000 metric tons each year, making it the third-largest producer after Australia and Chile. China's influence is far greater in refining, where it processes over 75% of the world's lithium into battery-grade material.

The U.S. produces less than 5,000 metric tons of lithium at a Nevada facility owned by Albemarle. Thacker Pass's first phase is expected to produce 40,000 metric tons of battery-quality lithium carbonate per year, enough for up to 800,000 EVs.

MANILA (Reuters) -The death toll from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the central Philippines has risen to 69, a disaster official said on Wednesday as the government mobilised agencies to search for survivors and restore power and water supplies.

In Bogo city in the north of Cebu province, which was near the epicentre of the shallow quake that struck off the coast just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the hospital has been "overwhelmed," Civil Defense official Raffy Alejandro told reporters.

The death toll of 69 was based on data from the Cebu provincial disaster office and was subject to validation, said Jane Abapo, an information officer at the regional Civil Defense office. Another official said more than 150 people were injured.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assured survivors of swift assistance, saying cabinet secretaries were on the ground directing relief operations, as he expressed his condolences to those who lost loved ones.

Cebu, one of the Philippines' most popular tourist destinations, is home to 3.4 million people. Despite the damage, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country's second busiest gateway, remained operational.

Another hard-hit town, San Remigio was placed under a state of calamity to help the response and relief efforts. Vice Mayor Alfie Reynes appealed for food and water for evacuees, as well as heavy equipment to aid search and rescue workers.

"It is raining heavily and there is no electricity so we really need help, especially in the northern part because there's a scarcity of water after supply lines were damaged by the earthquake," Reynes told DZMM radio.

In the nearby town of Pilar, resident Archel Coraza said most of his family were asleep when their house began to shake violently.

"I woke them up and we all rushed outside into the street," he told DZMM. Coraza, who lives close to the shoreline, said he saw seawater recede after the tremor.

Local media posted videos of people rushing out of their homes as the ground shook and buildings collapsed, including a church that was more than 100 years old.

Reynes said among the deceased were some people who had been playing basketball in a sports complex in San Remigio when it partially collapsed due to the quake.

Earthquake monitoring agencies put the quake's depth at around 10 km (6.2 miles) and recorded multiple aftershocks, the strongest having a magnitude of 6. There was no tsunami threat following the quake.

The Philippines lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. The country had two major earthquakes in January, with no casualties reported. In 2023, a 6.7 magnitude offshore earthquake killed eight people.

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's coast guard held a National Day flag-raising ceremony on a ship in the waters off the disputed Scarborough Shoal, vowing to "stand guard" over the atoll, a major flashpoint for diplomatic flare-ups and maritime clashes with the Philippines.

Both countries claim the triangular feature in the busy waterway of the South China Sea, but it is effectively under Beijing's control. In September, China infuriated Manila with a plan to set up a "national" nature reserve there.

Coast guard officers standing in formation on the rear deck of the patrol vessel Dahao (3304) saluted as the Chinese flag was raised, a video showed in a coast guard posting on Wednesday on Douyin, known as TikTok outside China.

"We stand guard over these blue waters, assuring the nation of our unwavering commitment," the video subtitles read.

The Philippine coast guard did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Wednesday.

In 2012 China seized control of the shoal after a standoff with the Philippines and has since kept a deployment of coast guard and fishing trawlers there.

A landmark ruling on South China Sea issues by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 went in favour of Manila but deciding sovereignty over the shoal was not within the scope of the decision.

The ruling held that Beijing's blockade there violated international law as it was a traditional fishing ground for several countries, including the Philippines and Vietnam.

Flare-ups near the shoal in recent years have included the use of water cannon, boat-ramming and manoeuvres by China's coast guard that the Philippines considers dangerously close, while jets have shadowed Philippine aircraft over it.

Both sides accuse each other of provocation and trespassing, though none of the clashes have escalated into armed conflict.

CCG vessel 3304 had been previously challenged by the Philippine coast guard for its "illegal presence" at the shoal, which China calls Huangyan Island while in the Philippines it is known as the Panatag Shoal.

Google and NBCUniversal inked a short-term extension on their existing carriage deal for YouTube TV, keeping the networks on the service for now as the sides work to hammer out final terms. The announcement came just after their previous pact expired Sept. 30 at midnight ET.

"We've reached a short-term extension to avoid disruption to our service while we work toward a new agreement with NBCUniversal," a Google spokesperson said. "We appreciate our subscribers' patience while we negotiate on their behalf."

NBCUniversal Could Be Headed for YouTube TV Blackout

NBCU last week started warning YouTube TV subs they they might lose access to its networks. Google has claimed that the media company "is asking us to pay more than what they charge consumers for the same content on Peacock, which would mean less flexibility and higher prices for our subscribers." If NBCU programming content is "unavailable for an extended period of time," YouTube TV subscribers will be eligible to receive a $10 credit, Google said in a message on its customer-support site.

At risk of going dark YouTube TV as a result of the dispute have been NBC shows including "Saturday Night Live," "The Voice," "Law & Order," "Chicago Fire," "Today" and "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" as well as NFL and college football and more, plus cable channels like Bravo, MSNBC, CNBC and USA.

Earlier Tuesday evening, YouTube TV dropped Univision and other TelevisaUnivision networks after the sides were unable to come to terms on a contract renewal. The previous YouTube TV carriage agreement with TelevisaUnivision expired Sept. 30 as well. YouTube TV is offering affected subscribers a $6 credit or refund with the TelevisaUnivision blackout.

The affected NBCU channels include those that are set to be spun off into Versant, the new company that will house its cable TV properties (with the exception of Bravo). The channels are: NBC local stations; MSNBC; USA; Bravo; Golf Channel; CNBC; Oxygen True Crime; E!; Cozi; Syfy; American Crimes; NBC News Now; and Telemundo and Universo. Also affected are regional sports networks NBC Sports Philadelphia, NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Sports Boston and NBC Sports California.

YouTube TV had an estimated 9.5 million customers as of the end of 2024, according to research firm MoffettNathanson — making it the biggest internet-delivered pay TV provider in the U.S.

Google has been embroiled in YouTube TV distribution deal disputes with other big programmers this year. After contentious deal talks, YouTube TV and Paramount Global (now Paramount Skydance) renewed their agreement to carry CBS stations nationwide and more than 20 other channels in February. And Fox Corp. and YouTube TV reached a renewal in August 2025 after a public back-and-forth.

And four years ago, Google and NBCU had tangled over YouTube TV: In 2021, NBCU's distribution deal for YouTube TV expired but the companies quickly worked out a long-term pact.

Justin Connolly, former head of distribution at Disney, joined YouTube as VP, global head of media this spring. Disney sued YouTube and Connolly, alleging breach of contract and seeking to block his employment at Google, but a California state court rejected Disney's request. According to Disney's lawsuit, the media company's contract for YouTube TV is up for renewal soon.

Eric Dane traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the reauthorization of ACT for ALS on Monday, Sept. 29

ACT for ALS was signed in 2021, and is set to expire in 2026

Dane said he was "going to fight to the last breath on this one" regarding his ALS diagnosis and the resources available for others living with the condition

Eric Dane is advocating for the reauthorization of ACT for ALS.

On Monday, Sept. 29, the actor, 52, traveled to Washington, D.C. with the nonprofit organization I AM ALS. Members of the organization - including staff members Andrea Goodman and Dustin Watson, board member Dan Tate and Legislative Affairs Team co-chair Jack Silva - joined Dane in a meeting with U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey, according to a post the organization shared on social media.

In a TikTok video shared by U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, Dane spoke about his ALS journey.

"ALS is the last thing they want to diagnose anybody with," Dane told the Democratic politician. "So often, it takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed, well, then it precludes them from being a part of these clinical trials."

He added, "That's why ACT for ALS is so so great, and it's because it broadens the access for everybody."

The actor, who shares daughters Billie Beatrice Dane, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13, with wife Rebecca Gayheart, went on to open up about his hopes for his family's future.

"I have two daughters at home. I want to see them, you know, graduate college, and get married and maybe have grandkids. You know, I want to be there for all that. So I'm going to fight to the last breath on this one," the actor said.

When Swalwell, 44, expressed his support for ALS advocacy, he asked Dane if there was anything else he could do. Dane humorously quipped, "Refill that espresso, maybe, I'm a little tired, man."

On Sept. 15, the Euphoria star took to Instagram to reveal a partnership with I AM ALS. In the video, he cosigned the group's new Push for Progress campaign, which aims to raise $1 billion for research over the next three years.

"I'm Eric, an actor, a father and now a person living with ALS," Dane said. The star remained seated during the brief clip, wearing a shirt that read "I AM ALS."

He continued, "For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we're done accepting the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure, and that's why I partnered with I Am ALS on the Push for Progress. Our goal: a billion dollars over the next three years."

"Together, we'll renew the landmark law Act for ALS, give promising treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally, push towards ending this disease," he continued, urging his followers to join the cause.

Act for ALS is a law that was signed in 2021 and is set to expire in 2026.

"This bill establishes grant programs to address neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease)," a summary from Congress reads.

Dane exclusively revealed his ALS diagnosis to PEOPLE in April 2025.

Blake Lively celebrated the launch of Betty Booze in ABC Fine Wine & Spirits with an Instagram post on Tuesday, Sept. 30

In the celebratory post she showed off her bright red ensemble — down to her patent leather red pumps

She revealed in the caption that she's owned the red heels for 16 years

The Gossip Girl alum recently joked about her extensive shoe collection as she was celebrating the launch of the newest iced tea product line from her company Betty Booze and its introduction into a new retailer.

Lively, 38, shared a post to Instagram on Tuesday, Sept. 30, thanking her collaborators at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits for stocking the drinks in its retail stores, located primarily in Florida and California.

She also thanked the minds behind her vivid ensemble, from the shoes and her lacy two-piece set to the jewelry. "Big shout out to @eliesaabworld for making me feel so fancy 🍓 🙏🥰," she wrote.

"And always to the bold and kind @particulieres.nyc for having the best taste in vintage jewelry 🩵💍 (ring pictured) and @mariatash for the cute earrings 🩵🩵."

Along with showcasing the stylists and designers behind the look, she called out her Chanel shoes — and confessed she's had them for over a decade. "[Shout out] to me for being a hoarder and keeping these gorgeous Chanel shoes since 2009. :)"

The Simple Favor actress wore the Elie Saab broderie peplum top in red — which retails for $1,170. She paired it with the matching broderie-anglaise palazzo pants. Lively's vintage Chanel red patent leather strass buckle heels completed the look.

Earlier this year, Lively's beverage company launched vodka iced teas in two flavors, Meyer Lemonade and Passion Fruit.

In the Tuesday, Sept. 30 Instagram, Lively honored all the team members who worked on the product, saying they've all "worked so hard and so personally on every single flavor and also every element of the design."

"Getting to share it with you and see you love them too, makes us feel so proud and grateful," she wrote. "Your support and enthusiasm means the world to us. It makes all the hard work pay off."

Lively previously opened up to PEOPLE about the launch, explaining how her Southern upbringing motivated her to create the spiked teas.

"I come from a Southern family, so iced tea, especially in the summertime is a staple," the actress and entrepreneur told PEOPLE in June. "Sweet tea, passion fruit tea, tea with fresh lemonade … it all feels like relaxation and peaceful times. Enjoying an iced tea is a feeling as much as an experience to me."

Lively initially launched her Betty Buzz brand in 2021 with sparkling mixers, later expanding into tequila and bourbon canned cocktails under Betty Booze in 2023.

When Lively announced the launch in 2023, she said on Instagram, "Drinking isn't my thing. But for f--- sake, flavor is." Adding, "Homemade recipes. Real fruit. Real ingredients. Quality booze. No crap. Also a real-time saver. Which is why I really did it."

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — European leaders are converging on Copenhagen on Wednesday for two summits focused on security, defense and the war in Ukraine, following a spate of troubling drone incidents at Danish airports and military bases over the last week.

Denmark's defense ministry said that a precision radar system has been set up at Copenhagen airport to help keep watch. Unidentified drones forced the closure of the airfield a week ago, causing major disruptions to air traffic.

France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the U.K. also sent aircraft, ships and air defense systems to Denmark ahead of the summits. Ukraine's armed forces have dispatched a mission to the Nordic country for joint exercises, sharing its expertise on combating Russian drones.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday on social media that while authorities can't conclude who is behind the hybrid attacks, "we can find that there is primarily one country that poses a threat to Europe's security – and that's Russia."

Russia is the focus of Wednesday's European Union leaders meeting, where discussions are expected to center on how to prepare Europe to fend off Russian aggression by 2030, especially as the United States turns its focus on security concerns in Asia and elsewhere.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is due to address the EU leaders by videolink.

Leaders and intelligence services believe that Russia could mount an assault elsewhere in Europe in 3 to 5 years, and that President Vladimir Putin is intent on testing NATO as doubts swirl about U.S. President Donald Trump's commitment to the organization.

On Sept. 10, when several Russian drones breached Poland's airspace, NATO aircraft were scrambled to intercept and shoot down some of the devices. It was the first direct encounter between NATO and Moscow since Russia launched its war on Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

The incident jolted leaders across Europe, raising questions about how prepared the alliance is against Russia. Days later, NATO jets escorted three Russian warplanes out of Estonia's airspace.

The EU talks on Ukraine will focus on continued military and financial support for the conflict-ravaged country, as funds, weapons and ammunition once provided by the United States dry up.

A new proposal to use frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine will be discussed.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other leaders from across Europe will join their EU partners for a dinner of the European Political Community (EPC) on Wednesday evening. Around 40 heads of state or government are due to take part.

The EPC leaders will gather on Thursday for talks also focused on security, as well as trafficking and migration. Critics say the forum — which draws together EU members, aspiring partners in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, as well as Britain and Turkey — is a political 'talking shop' that produces few tangible results.

Four people are dead and nearly two dozen were hospitalized due to a listeria outbreak connected to recalled ready-to-eat products sold nationwide at Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger and Albertsons stores, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially reported a recall involving prepared pasta meals on Thursday, Sept. 25, while investigating an outbreak of listeria monocytogenes contamination, which can cause listeriosis and listeria poisoning.

The federal agencies expanded the food safety alert this week, reporting the outbreak is now known to have occurred in 15 states, with a total of 20 confirmed infections as of Sept. 30.

Here's what to know about the recall, including which states have reported related listeriosis cases.

Consumer Reports, the nonprofit known for testing and monitoring consumer-facing policy and products, released its annual risky food report in April, naming the 10 foods of 2024 that were subject to the most recalls and/or associated with the largest illness outbreaks. USA TODAY broke it down further on a what-you-need-to-know basis.

4 dead in listeria outbreak, cases reported in 15 states

The listeria outbreak was first announced in June, when the CDC began investigating reports of illness.

As of Sept. 30, there were 20 confirmed cases of listeria poisoning linked to the outbreak, the CDC reported. Of those, 19 people were hospitalized, and four died. In one case, a pregnant woman experienced fetal loss as a result of a related infection.

In addition to Utah, deaths took place in Illinois, Michigan and Texas. Associated infections were confirmed in the following states: California (2 cases), Florida (1 case), Illinois (1 case), Indiana (1 case), Louisiana (2 cases), Michigan (2 cases), Minnesota (1 case), Missouri (1 case), Nevada (1 case), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (1 case), South Carolina (1 case), Texas (3 cases), Utah (1 case) and Virginia (1 case).

The numbers are only the known cases and likely do not represent the full extent of the outbreak, according to the CDC.

Both the CDC and FDA advise returning affected products to the place of purchase for a refund or tossing them in the trash.

Wash and sanitize bowls, cups, storage containers and other surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products. Always thoroughly wash your hands after handling and preparing food, especially raw or uncooked products.

What are the symptoms of listeria poisoning?

Listeria poisoning is a foodborne bacterial infection most commonly caused by the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, according to the CDC. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially to older adults, people with weak immune systems and pregnant women.

Per the CDC, symptoms include:

Fever

Muscle aches

Headache

Stiff neck

Confusion

Loss of balance

Convulsions

Diarrhea

Other gastrointestinal symptoms

Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and/or life-threatening infection of newborn infants

Death

Those in higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care, according to the CDC.

The U.S. government shutdown has begun after President Trump and Congress failed to reach a funding deal by Wednesday's deadline. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers face furloughs and many offices will close.

Trump has threatened irreversible actions as he seeks to punish Democrats. Democrats picked this fight as they demand funding to save health care subsidies that are expiring and sending insurance costs soaring. Republicans have refused to negotiate. More voting is expected Wednesday.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -Pope Leo on Tuesday appeared to offer his strongest criticism yet of U.S. President Donald Trump's hardline immigration policies, questioning whether they were in line with the Catholic Church's pro-life teachings.

"Someone who says I am against abortion but I am in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that's pro-life," the pontiff told journalists outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo.

The Catholic Church's position that life is sacred from conception until natural death is one of the 1.4-billion-member denomination's strongest teachings.

Leo, the first U.S. pope, was responding to a question from a U.S. journalist who asked about the country's politics.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elected in May to replace the late Pope Francis, Leo has shown a much more reserved style than his predecessor, who frequently criticized the Trump administration.

Leo was asked about a decision by the archdiocese of Chicago to give an award to Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat who supports abortion rights. The move has attracted vocal criticism from conservative Catholics, including several U.S. bishops.

"It is very important to look at the overall work that the Senator has done," said the pope.

"I understand the difficulty and the tensions but I think, as I myself have spoken in the past, it's important to look at many issues that are related to what is the teaching of the Church," he said.

"Someone who says I am against abortion but says I am in favour of the death penalty is not really pro-life," said the pope.

NEW YORK (AP) — Like thousands of actors, Tilly Norwood is looking for a Hollywood agent.

But unlike most young performers aspiring to make it in the film industry, Tilly Norwood is an entirely artificial intelligence-made character. Norwood, dubbed Hollywood's first "AI actor," is the product of a company named Xicoia, which bills itself as the world's first artificial intelligence talent studio.

Since the Dutch producer and comedian Eline Van der Velden launched the digital character's prospective career, Tilly Norwood has been all the talk in Hollywood.

But not in a good way. Guilds, actors and filmmakers have met the Xicoia product with an immediate wave of backlash, protesting that artificial intelligence should not have a starring role in the acting profession. In a statement Tuesday, the Screen Actors Guild said that "creativity is, and should remain, human-centered."

"To be clear, 'Tilly Norwood' is not an actor, it's a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation," the guild said. "It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we've seen, audiences aren't interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience."

Van der Velden, founder of the AI production studio Particle6, last weekend promoted Tilly Norwood at the Zurich Summit, the industry sidebar of the Zurich Film Festival. She said then that talent agencies were circling Norwood and that she expected to soon announce a signing.

Many in Hollywood, though, hope that never happens.

"Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$," wrote actor Melissa Barrera ("In the Heights," "Scream") on social media. "How gross, read the room."

"Any talent agency that engages in this should be boycotted by all guilds," wrote Natasha Lyonne on Instagram. The "Russian Doll" star is directing a feature titled "Uncanny Valley" that pledges to use "ethical" artificial intelligence in combination with traditional filmmaking techniques. "Deeply misguided & totally disturbed," she added. "Not the way. Not the vibe. Not the use."

Artificial intelligence is often used as a tool in film production, though its implementation is hotly debated. It was a major bargaining point in the lengthy strike by SAG-AFTRA that concluded in late 2023 with some safeguards put in place to protect the use of actors' likenesses and performances by AI. A yearlong strike by video game actors hinged on AI protections. In July, video game actors approved a new contract that mandates employers obtain written permission to create a digital replica.

But there have been numerous controversies over the use of AI in acting. The Oscar-winning 2024 film "The Brutalist" used artificial intelligence for Hungarian dialogue spoken by Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones' characters, the revelation of which prompted debate in the industry.

Van der Velden responded to the stir around Tilly Norwood on Instagram.

"To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work — a piece of art," Van der Velden said on Sunday. "Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity."

Van der Velden didn't respond to interview requests Tuesday. In her post, she argued that AI characters should be judged as their own genre.

"Creating Tilly has been, for me, an act of imagination and craftsmanship, not unlike drawing a character, writing a role or shaping a performance," she added. "It takes time, skill and iteration to bring such a character to life."

That statement was also shared on Tilly Norwood's own Instagram account. Posts include photos of the creation drinking coffee, shopping for clothes and preparing for various projects. As of Tuesday, the account had more than 33,000 followers.

"Had such a blast filming some screen tests recently," one post reads. "Every day feels like a step closer to the big screen."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. government shut down much of its operations on Wednesday as deep partisan divisions prevented Congress and the White House from reaching a funding deal, setting off what could be a long, grueling standoff that could lead to the loss of thousands of federal jobs.

There was no clear path out of the impasse, while agencies warned that the 15th government shutdown since 1981 would halt the release of a closely watched September employment report, slow air travel, suspend scientific research, withhold pay from U.S. troops and lead to the furlough of 750,000 federal workers at a daily cost of $400 million.

Trump, whose campaign to radically reshape the federal government is already on track to push out some 300,000 workers by December, warned congressional Democrats that a shutdown could clear the path for "irreversible" actions including cutting more jobs and programs.

The shutdown commenced hours after the Senate rejected a short-term spending measure that would have kept government operations afloat through November 21. Democrats opposed the legislation over Republicans' refusal to attach an extension of health benefits for millions of Americans that are due to expire at the end of the year. Republicans say the issue must be addressed separately.

At issue on the government funding front is $1.7 trillion for agency operations, which amounts to roughly one-quarter of the government's total $7 trillion budget. Much of the remainder goes to health and retirement programs and interest payments on the growing $37.5 trillion debt.

Independent analysts warn the shutdown could last longer than the budget-related closures of the past, with Trump and White House officials threatening to punish Democrats with cuts to government programs and the federal payroll. Trump budget director Russell Vought, who has called for "less bipartisan" appropriations, threatened permanent layoffs last week in the event of a shutdown.

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history stretched over 35 days during December 2018 and January 2019 during Trump's first term in office, in a dispute over border security.

"All they want to do is try to bully us. And they're not going to succeed," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said in a floor speech a day after a White House meeting with Trump and other congressional leaders that ended with the two parties far apart.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune described the failed short-term spending bill as a "nonpartisan" measure devoid of partisan policy riders that Democrats have had no problem accepting in years past.

"What's changed is, President Trump is in the White House. That's what this is about. This is politics. And there isn't any substantive reason why there ought to be a government shutdown," the South Dakota Republican told reporters.

Trump's Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, but legislative rules require 60 of the 100 senators to agree on spending legislation. That means that at least seven Democrats are needed to pass a funding bill.

Democrats are under pressure from their frustrated supporters to score a rare victory ahead of the 2026 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress for the final two years of Trump's term.

The healthcare push has given them a chance to unite behind an issue that resonates with voters.

Along with the extended health subsidies, Democrats have also sought to ensure that Trump will not be able to undo those changes if they are signed into law. Trump has refused to spend billions of dollars approved by Congress, prompting some Democrats to question why they should vote for any spending legislation at all.

University of Chicago professor Robert Pape said the unusually polarized U.S. political climate in the aftermath of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination and the growing power on the extreme wings of both parties could make it harder for party leaders to agree on a deal to reopen the government.

"The rules of politics are radically changing and we can't know for sure where all of this is going to end," said University of Chicago political science professor Robert Pape, who studies political violence.

"Each side would have to backtrack against tens of millions of truly aggressive supporters, their own constituents, which is going to be really hard for them to do," he said.

Before the shutdown, Trump reached out to his own supporters with a deepfake video showing manipulated images of Schumer appearing to criticize Democrats while top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries stood next to him, with a crudely drawn sombrero and mustache imposed over his face.

"It was childish. It was petty," Schumer told reporters. "It's something that a 5-year-old would do, not a president of the United States. But it shows how unserious they are. They don't give a damn about the harm they will cause with their shutdown."
