Robert Irwin revealed how he stays connected to his late dad, Steve Irwin, nearly two decades after his death.
The wildlife conservationist, 21, explained that his native Australia is a place that always reminds him of his father. "It is where I feel his energy and his passion more than anywhere else," Robert said about his home base while speaking to Travel + Leisure in an interview published on Friday, September 19.
"That's the great part of getting to live here," he continued. "It's so easy to get out in the middle of nowhere and just forget everything. You feel like you're part of something so much bigger than yourself."
Robert went on to explain that Steve was always "the embodiment of passion, of living life to 100 percent," which are traits he associates with Australia.
"If Australia were a person, it would be my dad," Robert said. "To love your wildlife, to be passionate, to have that spirit of mateship and camaraderie with everyone. He is just a superhero to me."
Steve died in September 2006 at the age of 44 after he was attacked by a stingray while filming in the Batt Reef off the coast of Australia. In addition to Robert, Steve shared daughter Bindi Irwin with his wife, Terri Irwin.

Robert is now carrying on Steve's mission of wildlife conservancy by working at the Australia Zoo, where he works with rehabilitated wildlife alongside Terri, 61, Bindi, 27, and his brother-in-law, Chandler Powell.
While he's currently taking a break from the zoo to compete on season 34 of Dancing With the Stars, Robert is determined to spread his message of wildlife conservation with the help of his growing platform.
"In my line of work, I get to see two sides to the same coin," he told People in an interview published on September 10. "I see the beauty of nature, because I'm immersed in it every day, but I also get to see the absolute atrocities that are happening to the natural world. I mean, there's no two ways about it — we're going through a very, very tough time with the planet and climate change."
