Super Typhoon Ragasa, the world's most powerful tropical cyclone this year, is moving toward Hong Kong, bringing heavy rainfall and destructive winds to the city. The China Meteorological Administration has since dubbed Ragasa as the "King of Storms."

The typhoon is set to be closest to Hong Kong in the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 24, per the most recent advisory from the Hong Kong Observatory. As of 2 a.m. local time, Ragasa was centered approximately 90 miles south-southeast of Hong Kong.

Local winds in Hong Kong will continue to strengthen, and areas that were previously sheltered may become exposed, the Hong Kong Observatory warns. The public should remain on high alert, as local weather will be "persistently adverse today" with heavy rain showers and thunderstorms, according to forecasters. Overtopping of waves over the shoreline will be "phenomenal with swells," and the public is advised to stay away from the water and refrain from engaging in water sports.

How to stay safe in this super typhoon, according to forecasters

In their latest advisory, the Hong Kong Observatory shared a list of precautionary measures that residents should take.

Do not go outside and do not touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

People outdoors should find a safe place and remain there until danger has passed.

Avoid going to low-lying areas, as serious flooding may occur.

Stay clear of exposed windows and doors, as glass may shatter easily.

Remain alert.

Residents in Hong Kong have taken necessary precautions to prepare themselves for Super Typhoon Ragasa's arrival. Shelves at supermarkets have emptied, and windows have been either boarded or taped up in an effort to prevent extensive damage to properties. People living in areas that are prone to flooding have also stacked sandbags and put barriers at their doors.

Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong-based airline, has also canceled more than 500 flights, disrupting major routes to international cities like San Francisco, Vancouver and Zurich. The airline announced that flights scheduled to arrive and depart from Hong Kong International Airport on Sept. 23 and 24 have been affected.

Chinese authorities have shut down schools and businesses in at least 10 cities, as Ragasa approaches. In Guangdong, north of Hong Kong, approximately 370,000 people have been evacuated so far.

Predicted path of Ragasa

As of 1 a.m. Hong Kong time on Sept. 24, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center indicated the typhoon's maximum sustained wind near the center as being about 121 mph.

Ragasa is expected to move closer to the area of the Pearl River Delta, a region where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea, to the western coast of Guangdong on Sept. 24. Once the typhoon makes landfall in southern China on Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to pass the coast of the Gulf of Tonkin before tracking into northern Vietnam and Laos, where it will likely weaken rapidly.
