Elizabeth Olsen spoke to InStyle as the magazine's newest cover star
As a kid, she recalled, she wanted to be a child actor like her famous sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley
But Olsen "didn't need to do it until later," she said
Elizabeth Olsen knew exactly what she wanted — and when she wanted it — at age 10.
In a Tuesday, Oct. 21 InStyle cover story, the Eternity star, 36, recalled that at a young age she considered following in the footsteps of her twin sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, both 39. As the two child superstars broke out in Hollywood, they "always went to a school," she explained.
"I thought I wanted to be a child actor, but then my ballet teacher wouldn't put me in The Nutcracker because I'd missed so many rehearsals. And that was the only Nutcracker I wasn't in my whole life because I was auditioning for TV or film or whatever," said Olsen, who joined her older sisters in only one of their movies, 1994's How the West Was Fun.
"I wanted to have the career I have now," continued the Avengers star, "but I didn't need to do it until later."

Why didn't she follow her sisters' example and pursue her dream sooner rather than later? "I wanted to do recess with my friends," quipped Olsen.
Olsen and her two actor-turned-designer sisters also share siblings Trent, Courtney and Jake. After the twins became household names thanks to Full House and their many movies, their younger sister broke into indie film with 2011's award-winning Martha Marcy May Marlene.
Of her most famous role — the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch — Olsen told InStyle she'd "jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again" following the character's apparent demise in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. "It's good to put her down and then I miss her and I want her back."

Olsen stars with Miles Teller and Callum Turner in A24's fantasy romantic comedy Eternity (in select theaters Nov. 14, nationwide Nov. 26). Among her other upcoming projects is Panic Carefully, costarring Julia Roberts.
