It's always a fun surprise when you find out certain unlikely friends of yours are actually huge reality-TV fans.
Anyone who knows John Oliver personally is probably aware he loves The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City — but for the rest of the world, it might come as a surprise.
The Emmy-winning TV host, 48, recently opened up to Us Weekly about his admiration for the ladies of RHOSLC before hosting this week's Only Make Believe Gala.
"I think it's one of the best TV programs in any genre on television, and it's certainly one of the funniest, because they're very funny," Oliver told the magazine on Monday, Oct. 13. "They are absolute monsters. They know exactly what they're doing. They do it incredibly well."
The funnyman continued, What they're doing is not necessarily a net positive for humanity, but no one does it like them. They've advanced the form of the Housewives formula, and they will burn out like a comet. You can't do it this well for this long and survive. One of them has already ended up in prison."
As other fans of the show are well aware, RHOSLC star Jen Shah was sentenced to 78 months in prison for her role in a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme following her 2021 arrest and indictment.
Shah, 52, had pled guilty to the charges in July of 2022, per Deadline, as part of a plea deal after originally pleading not guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and wire fraud in April of 2021.
"Jennifer Shah was a key participant in a nationwide scheme that targeted elderly, vulnerable victims," Damian Williams, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement at the time. "These victims were sold false promises of financial security but instead Shah and her co-conspirators defrauded them out of their savings and left them with nothing to show for it."
"I'm not sure she'll be the last," Oliver told Us Weekly on Monday regarding Shah and her fellow cast members. "And that's why they're so good at whatever it is they do."
