Selena Gomezset the record straight about her beauty routine as she responded to a comment about her grooming habits.
In a Tuesday, Dec. 16, Instagram Stories post, theOnly Murders in the Buildingsstar, who appeared makeup-free in the video, said, "someone made me laugh because they asked me, 'how do you shave your mustache.' " But she pointed out that she doesn't have a five o'clock shadow — "it's my melasma," she confessed. "I take care of it and treat it, but yeah it's there."
"I totally get it," she added. "It's from the sun," the singer, 33, explained while encouraging her followers to use sunscreen.
Melasma is a skin condition that can cause brown or blue-gray patches, particularly on areas of the face, including the upper lip, and sometimes the neck, back and arms, according toCleveland Clinic. It can be caused by exposure to sunlight or radiation "whether ultraviolet, visible light, or infrared (heat) light" as well as changes in hormones.
Over the years, Gomez has embraced her natural beauty and openly discussed herexperience with acne. "I notice when I get stressed or something I break out more or I get lazy with my routine so I feel like it's just become a part of it. And I just deal with whatever I got that day," the Emmy nominee said in herVogue's Beauty Secrets episode.
"When you are taking care of your skin you are taking care of your body and your mind and your soul just because I think it's all connected," she shared, adding that sunscreen is always going to be an important part of her routine because of her Lupus diagnosis.
Gomez has also addressed her cosmetic enhancements while simultaneouslyshutting down speculation about the work she's had done. In 2024, she admitted to getting Botox, but slammed any other rumors about her appearance under a TikTok video with a side-by-side photo comparing Gomez's past and present image. "Honestly I hate this. I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That's it. Leave me alone," she commented, as many speculated that "stripes" was an autocorrect of "steroids."

Still, she's worked through the outside commentary by learning how to lift herself up when she's not feeling her best.
"Some days you just have to let yourself get it out, and then afterwards, a good laugh," Gomez told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview at the Oct. 29Rare Impact Fund Benefitin Los Angeles. "I don't know the key. I just know what works for me."
"I like to maybe just see one friend … and talk to my therapist, and look for people that help in the situation," she added of her self-care routine.
