Updated NFL playoff bracket

There are four teams remaining, and the NFC opponents know each other quite well.

The Rams and Seahawks are NFC West rivals, meeting for a third time this year. The two teams split the regular-season series this year as each won its home game.

Their most recent game was just over one month ago, on Dec. 18 in Week 16. The Seahawks stormed back from a 30-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. In overtime, both teams scored a touchdown; however, Seattle won the game with a two-point conversion to walk it off. Both teams gained over 400 yards of offense, and the Rams recorded a league high of 581 yards.

Meanwhile, theDenver Broncosand the New England Patriots are meeting in the NFL postseason for the first time since the 2015 AFC championship game. A decade ago, Peyton Manning led the Broncos over Tom Brady and the Patriots 20-18 in what ended up being the last head-to-head between Brady and Manning. Denver went on to win Super Bowl 50 and Manning retired.

Denver hopes to repeat history, while the Patriots will be looking to take advantage of the Broncos, who lost starting quarterbackBo Nixtoa season-ending ankle injuryin the team's divisional-round win.

How does the NFL playoff bracket work?

The NFL playoff bracket is ever-changing and differs from the static formats common in other leagues. That means that seedings play a significant role in future matchups. Based on seeding, the No. 1-seeded Broncos and Seahawks faced off against the worst team remaining in their conference in the divisional round.

The No. 1 seeds were granted a bye to the divisional round of the postseason, while the remaining six teams in each conference played in the wild-card round.

Denver and Seattle also held home-field advantage throughout their respective brackets, as long as they remained in the playoffs. If either team lost, the best remaining team – based on seeding – would have gained home-field advantage. Since the Broncos and Seahawks both won, they will host their respective conference championship games.

With just four teams left – two in each conference – there's no additional room for the bracket's dynamic nature. The four teams that won last weekend will face off in their respective conference championship games this weekend to determine who will travel to Santa Clara for Super Bowl 60.
