Why Timothée Chalamet pushed a 'Marty Supreme' background actor on set

Timothée Chalametadmits he might have gone too far when pushing a background actor on the set of "Marty Supreme."

While filming the table tennis movie, the "A Complete Unknown" star said he tried to get a non-actor to convey anger for a take. "I won't say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors… that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them," Chalamet toldRobert Downey Jr.during a Jan. 14 Q&A in Los Angeles.

"And I'm really getting in the guy's face, and I'm really trying to get him angry with me."

Timothee Chalamet attends the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California, on Jan. 11, 2026.

He recounted venting to directorJosh Safdie, saying, "He's not getting angry with me, he's not getting angry with me."

To Chalamet's surprise, his efforts promoted legitimate hostility off camera.

"I did another take, and then the guy said, 'I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don't want to (expletive) with me. You don't want to see me angry," Chalamet said. "I said to Josh, 'Holy (expletive), who do you have me opposite, man?'"
