Following the discovery of his wife's burned remains, a California man was taken into custody on murder charges, despite previously claiming that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had apprehended her.

Thirty-year-old Jasmine Gill was reported missing by a cousin on October 4, after being last seen at her Sacramento home on September 30. Her husband, Gurinder Singh Gill, 28, alleged to law enforcement that ICE officers had detained her as she was retrieving the mail, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

However, upon contacting ICE, investigators verified that no enforcement operations had occurred at the Gill residence.

Further investigation revealed that the couple was undergoing a divorce and embroiled in a custody battle over their child.

Additionally, authorities noted "several inconsistencies" in Gurinder's account regarding his wife's disappearance.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, burned human remains discovered in El Dorado County on October 1 were subsequently identified as Jasmine's.

Gurinder was arrested on Wednesday and held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail, facing murder charges, according to the sheriff's office records.

Court documents reviewed by the Daily Mail show he was arraigned on Friday afternoon, though neither judicial records nor law enforcement currently list any upcoming court appearances.

According to a missing persons poster, Jasmine was last seen in Sacramento County near Headstock Street and Allegretto Way.

When she disappeared, she was described as 5-foot-3, weighing around 137 pounds, and wearing white pajamas with red polka dots.

The missing persons poster issued a grim warning, noting that "new information indicates her safety may be at risk."

A GoFundMe campaign, launched by her relative Daman Gill, stated that Jasmine worked as a registered nurse, following in her mother's footsteps in India, and was raising an eight-month-old baby boy.

"Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of her story is that she was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby," the fundraiser read. "She was trying to find the freedom, safety, and fresh start they both deserved."

"Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect," the GoFundMe continued.

The family is seeking legal support regarding child welfare and custody matters. Additionally, the funds raised, which reached approximately $6,000 by Saturday night, will help repatriate Jasmine's body to India, allowing her family and relatives to pay their final respects.
