TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A federal government employee was taken into custody Tuesday following an "active shooter hoax" that plunged New Jersey's largest military base into lockdown earlier in the day, according to the state's acting U.S. attorney, Alina Habba.

In a social media post Tuesday night, Habba said the civilian employee — who has not been named — was in custody for "conveying false information regarding an active shooter at Joint Base McGuire."

That sprawling base, among the nation's largest military installations, was placed under lockdown Tuesday morning.

A statement on the base's Facebook page urged all personnel to shelter in place. The statement did not describe the nature of the threat. The lockdown was lifted just before noon, a little under an hour after it was announced.

Habba's statement did not elaborate on the employee's alleged actions, but it described the person, in an all-caps statement, as a "suspects in...today's active shooter hoax."

An e-mailed inquiry to the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey was not immediately returned.

"This kind of senseless fear-mongering and disruption will not be tolerated in my state," Habba added. "After everything this country has gone through, especially in light of current events, I will be sure to bring down the hammer of the law for anyone found guilty of creating unnecessary panic and undermining public trust."

The U.S. Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is one of the nation's largest military installations. It spans 42,000 acres (17,000 hectares) and combines Air Force, Army and Navy functions and counts over 42,000 service members, relatives and civilian employees.

The base is about 18 miles (29 kilometers) south of Trenton, the state capital, and about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Philadelphia.

The incident unfolded Tuesday as U.S. military leaders were gathered at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had summoned them from around the world to hear him declare an end to "woke" culture in the armed forces.

It comes after recent violence at military installations in recent years.

Last month, an Army sergeant was charged with shooting five fellow soldiers at a Georgia base. Other shootings have ranged from individual disputes between service members to assaults on bases to mass-casualty attacks, such as the 2009 shooting, by an Army psychiatrist, that killed 13 people at Texas' Ford Hood.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Planned Parenthood on Tuesday shuttered its two clinics in Louisiana over what the organization said were mounting financial and political challenges that made operating in the state no longer possible after more than 40 years.

The closures make Louisiana the most populous of just four states with no Planned Parenthood locations.

The exit underlines the pressures on Planned Parenthood as it warns of wider closures nationwide in the face of Medicaid funding cuts in President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill. The organization is also halting advocacy work in Louisiana, where the state's Republican leaders have cheered on the closures.

The closures were "not the result of a lack of need" but rather the outcome of "relentless political assaults that have made it impossible for us to continue operating sustainably in Louisiana," said Melaney Linton, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.

Supporters have said the closures will have a detrimental impact on Louisiana, where Planned Parenthood has never been licensed to perform abortions in the state but did provide other medical care services to nearly 11,000 patients last year at its Baton Rouge and New Orleans clinics.

Advocates and medical professionals fear that the organization's departure will further exacerbate reproductive health care in a state that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows already has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. In addition, a March report by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's office noted the state's significant OB-GYN shortage and health care deserts.

Planned Parenthood warns of more closures

Trump's spending and tax plan instructs the federal government to end Medicaid payments for one year to certain abortion providers. While the organization is seeking to have its funding restored through the courts, Planned Parenthood officials have warned that around one-third of roughly 600 clinics could be forced to close.

Earlier this year, five clinics in California and eight in Iowa and Minnesota shut their doors. In the past week, the Wisconsin affiliate announced that it would stop providing abortion and the Arizona affiliate said it would halt Medicaid-funded services.

Louisiana joins Wyoming, North Dakota and Mississippi as states where the organization is absent.

"This is a win for babies, a win for mothers, and a win for LIFE!" Republican Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry posted on social media Tuesday.

High numbers of Medicaid patients

Planned Parenthood provides a wide range of services, including cancer screenings and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. Federal Medicaid money was already not paying for abortion, but affiliates relied on Medicaid to stay afloat.

In Louisiana, a state with one of the nation's highest poverty rates, 60% of patients at Planned Parenthood clinics used Medicaid. Last year, the clinics in Louisiana provided nearly 30,000 tests for sexually transmitted infections, 14,400 visits for birth control, 1,800 cancer screenings and 655 ultrasounds.

Nearly a decade ago, Jordyn Martin said she turned to Planned Parenthood when she couldn't afford medical services anywhere else. While at the clinic, a doctor offered Martin a free HIV test. A week later, she was diagnosed with the virus.

"Planned Parenthood saved my life," said Martin, who went on to volunteer for the organization.

Connecting patients with new providers

Outside of the New Orleans Planned Parenthood clinic Tuesday, several people gathered and brought thank-you notes to the organization that has spent four decades in Louisiana. Inside the building, up until close, staff worked to connect patients with alternative health care providers.

Starting Wednesday, calls to Planned Parenthood numbers in Louisiana will be transferred to the nearest location in Texas or Arkansas.

Michelle Erenberg, the head of a New Orleans-based abortion rights group named LIFT, said people have been contacting her for help to find new clinics. She said it was important to connect people with providers but worries about the strain it will put on clinics that are already short-staffed.

"Whether patients are going to be able to get appointments quickly, or access all of the services that Planned Parenthood provided, is unknown at this point," she said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jonathan Kuminga agreed to a two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors that could be worth up to $46.5 million if the team exercises its option for 2026-27, a person with knowledge of the contract said Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't made a formal announcement. Kuminga has had a $7.9 million qualifying offer in hand since June 29 but was also weighing other options. He had until Wednesday night to accept the qualifying offer.

Kuminga missed media day Monday and Day 1 of training camp Tuesday, but many of his teammates expressed support and confidence that the high-flying forward would show up ready to work and help the team win.

Kuminga, who turns 23 on Oct. 6, missed much of last season with a right ankle injury. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 24.3 minutes over 47 games with 10 starts.

The unsettled situation for Kuminga, a restricted free agent, has overshadowed the offseason and delayed general manager Mike Dunleavy's ability to build the roster.

Center Al Horford had reached agreement on a deal and now guard Seth Curry — the younger brother of Warriors star Stephen Curry — is set to join the mix, too.

Stephen Curry said players had discussed how things would go once Kuminga is back in the fold.

"We talk about it for sure," he said Monday. "As leaders on the team you have to acknowledge what's going on and don't make it more than what it is.

"Knowing JK's situation, knowing the new faces that we're adding to the roster, we talk about it every year going into a training camp — what it's going to take for that particular team to win."

OK, Shohei

Shohei Ohtani picked up in the postseason where he left off another likely MVP regular season — with a bang. Ohtani took his usual leadoff spot in the Dodgers' lineup for Game 1 of their wild-card series against the Reds Tuesday night.

He worked Reds starter Hunter Greene to a 2-1 count. Greene responded with a 100 mph fastball over the inside corner of the plate. Ohtani turned on it and deposited a laser into the right-field bleachers at Dodger Stadium.

ESPN's Jon Sciambi barely had time to call the home run before it was over the wall for a 1-0 Dodgers lead.

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) October 1, 2025

There's good reason. The home run was a first-of-its-kind. Or at least a first-of-its-kind in the Statcast era.

The ball left Ohtani's bat at 117.7 mph and traveled 375 feet on a line drive. That's the fastest home run hit off a 100-plus mph pitch since Statcast started tracking such stats in 2015. By a long shot.

Per MLB Stats, then-Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers previously held the distinction with a 113.7 mph blast off a 100 mph Gerrit Cole fastball against the Yankees on June 27, 2021. Ohtani's exit velocity Tuesday bested Devers' by a full 4 mph.

[Yahoo Sports TV is here! Watch live shows and highlights 24/7]

Ohtani's home run is also one of the hardest hit of any kind in the postseason in the Statcast era. Per MLB.com's Sarah Langs, only Kyle Schwarber, Giancarlo Stanton and Ohtani himself have hit harder home runs since 2015.

It adds up to a stellar start to Ohtani's postseason. At this point, we shouldn't expect anything less.

CLEVELAND -- Tarik Skubal struck out a record-setting 14 over 7 2/3 innings and Riley Greene scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on Zach McKinstry's safety squeeze to give the Detroit Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday afternoon in Game 1 of their American League wild-card series.

Reigning Cy Young Award winner Skubal (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and walked three in a 107-pitch gem. The left-hander made his third consecutive start against AL Central champion Cleveland in a 13-day span and beat them for the first time.

Skubal broke the mark of 13 strikeouts in a wild-card game accomplished by the New York Yankees' Gerrit Cole and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw in 2020. Will Vest recorded the final four outs for the save.

"I was just worried about executing each pitch and trying to do my best pitch-to-pitch and do what I do that makes me a great pitcher," Skubal said.

The Guardians put a runner on third with no outs in the ninth as Jose Ramirez singled and advanced on a throwing error by shortstop Javier Baez. Vest quelled the threat by striking out George Valera, tagging out Ramirez on Kyle Manzardo's one-hopper back to the mound and inducing a popout by pinch hitter C.J. Kayfus.

"You hope with a runner on third and no out that we could hit a ball to the outfield," said Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Wednesday in Cleveland.

Both Tigers runs off Guardians starter Gavin Williams (0-1) were unearned thanks to errors by right fielder Johnathan Rodriguez in the first and first baseman Jhonkensy Noel in the seventh. The right-hander scattered five hits and one walk over six-plus innings, striking out eight.

"It's a three-game series for a reason," Williams said. "We've got to win two, and that's what we're trying to do starting (Wednesday). I wish the first inning never happened. I left a couple pitches up in the zone and they hit them."

Greene doubled against Williams to lead off the seventh and moved to third when first baseman Noel dropped the throw from Brayan Rocchio on Wenceel Perez's grounder. McKinstry's one-out bunt to Noel came against reliever Hunter Gaddis, easily bringing home Greene.

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the first on Spencer Torkelson's single to left field that scored Kerry Carpenter from second. Carpenter got into scoring position when Rodriguez mishandled his single while attempting to pick up the ball.

Gutsy baserunning by Angel Martinez enabled Cleveland to tie it 1-1 in the fourth. Martinez was on second when Gabriel Arias hit a chopper over Skubal, who fielded the ball behind the mound and fired home off his back foot.

Home plate umpire Shane Livensparger initially called Martinez out, but it was overturned on a replay challenge by Vogt that revealed Martinez's left hand touched the plate prior to Dillon Dingler's tag.

The Guardians won eight of the teams' 13 regular-season contests after beating Detroit in five games in the 2024 AL Division Series.

"Anyone new to the Tigers and Guardians, this is what they look like. Like every game," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. "Obviously, Tarik set an incredible tone for us. He's been incredible for us all season, but what a performance at the biggest moments in the biggest stage to get us in a great position to win the game."

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Rams edge rusher Jared Verse gets part of his own edge by running a steady stream of trash talk and jokes at his opponents.

But Verse grinningly admits he won't be quite so verbose when the Rams (3-1) host the San Francisco 49ers (3-1) and their 11-time Pro Bowl left tackle, Trent Williams, on Thursday night.

"I don't lie down for anybody," Verse said. "I don't change up how I am for anybody. But I also am not, you know, dumb. I'd rather let a sleeping giant sleep. I'm not going to wake up nobody that's minding their business, especially somebody like that."

Verse admits he struggled against Williams in their only previous meeting last September. He rarely struggled for long stretches at any other point last season on the way to the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

"Trent is one of the best linemen ever," Verse said. "He's probably going in the Hall of Fame for a reason. I think he's been in the league longer than I've played football, so he kind of understands it. But I think the biggest challenge he adds is with age, you become more savvy. He's figured out, 'OK, I'm not going to take this block head-on. I'm going to manipulate it.' He's going to mess with you just a little bit that makes you not be able to make the play, but he's still that dominant version of Trent that can get right in front of you and stop him in the pass rush."

Verse has followed up his impressive rookie year with two sacks, six quarterback hits and 17 tackles in the Rams' first four games. While he trails teammate Byron Young, the NFL co-leader with five sacks, Verse is drawing extreme attention from opponents' offensive lines, sometimes clearing space for his teammates to capitalize.

Verse heads into this NFC West showdown with the Niners after the best performance of the new season. He had a sack and six pressures in the Rams' 27-20 comeback victory over the Colts.

He also produced another memorable highlight when the Rams rushed him up the middle from a stand-up position, instead of coming off the edge. With perfect timing, Verse ran over Indianapolis center Tanor Bortolini on the way to forcing an incompletion by Daniel Jones — and only missing a sack because he was tripped, according to Sean McVay.

"That was awesome," the head coach said. "You talk about timing it up with the play clock going down. It looked like a trip to me potentially, but I thought he was awesome. I think really the last couple of weeks, the energy, the pre-snap demeanor and the vibe that he's brought to our group, I think he's been excellent."

It was the type of spectacular athletic play that Verse makes regularly. He still had to petition the Rams' defensive coaching staff to put the unusual scheme into the game plan, allowing him to rush up the middle.

"It's something I enjoy," Verse said. "I like being in different positions, because it's not often I get to go up against a center or guard and use my speed, my power, to be able to play them games from a different position. I like that."

Verse is one big reason why the Rams are second in the league with 14 sacks while ranking in the top 10 against both the run and the pass. San Francisco quarterback Mac Jones said Tuesday that he thinks the Rams have the best defense in the league.

"I feel we're definitely getting a lot more respect," Verse said. "To say we're the best defense, that could be neither here nor there. I think we've got a lot of things to work on, but I'm not really focused too much on being the best defense in the league. … When we're the best version of us, we can dog anybody."
