On Friday, Dec. 5., the legendary journalist and entrepreneur, 68, shared athrowback photoon Instagram of her and her late husband, Jay Monahan, on their wedding day in 1989.

"This photo popped up on my phone this morning. It's my wedding day to Jay—June 10, 1989," she began her caption. "We had no idea that day he would be diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer just 8 years later. It made me think that we never really know what lies ahead and it was a reminder to appreciate every day and cherish those you love."

Monahan tragically died from colon cancer on Jan. 24, 1998 at 42 years old, leaving Couric a single mom to daughters Carrie and Ellie, now 29 and 24, respectively.

The loss was agonizing, but time and the support of her loved ones has helped Couric heal. "I understand the fragility of life in a way that will always be with me," she told PEOPLE in 2021.

Couric later found love again with John Molner, whom shewed in 2014.

In Instagram caption, Couric added, "When I showed Molner the photo he said, 'Oh…that's so nice.' He never feels threatened by Jay's memory and understands a heart has space for two people."

"It's very worrisome to see the number of people under the age of 50 who are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer increase," she told PEOPLE. "I'm really trying to spread the word that the age for screening has been reduced to 45. Unfortunately, only 20% of people between the ages of 45 and 49 have gotten screened. So there's a lot of wood to chop in that area."

Couric also said that after so many years of raising awareness, she still gets excited about finding new ways to shed light on the issue. "I tookJimmy Kimmeltoget a colonoscopy. I've been trying to see ifKevin Hart, who just turned 45, will be my next victim… I mean patient," she quipped at the time.

"I never run out of ways to talk about colon cancer," she continued. "Sometimes I try to use humor, sometimes I try to use celebrities, and sometimes I really just talk directly to my audience about the importance of getting screened. Even if I'm giving a speech that has nothing to do about cancer, whether it's a few people or a big crowd, I always remind them about getting screened. Screening saves lives."

14 cases of Legionnaires' disease reported in Florida, may be linked to gym

At least 14 cases of Legionnaires' disease have been reported in central Florida.

In an email to state Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith, the Florida Department of Health revealed the outbreak is linked to a gym, reported ABC News affiliateWFTV.

The letter from the department did not list the name of the gym, but WFTV reported that a Crunch Fitness in Ocoee -- 12 miles west of Orlando -- had members reporting cases of Legionnaires' disease.

Crunch Fitness told the station it is working with the health department, has closed off parts of the gym and is testing its pool and spa systems "out of an abundance of caution."

Neither the Florida Department of Health nor Crunch Fitness immediately returned ABC News' request for comment.

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumoniacausedby inhaling the Legionella bacteria in small droplets of water mixed in the air or contaminated water accidentally going into your lungs.

Legionella bacteria are found naturally in freshwater but typically grow best in warm water and in warm to hot temperatures, according to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

The disease does not spread from person to person, but outbreaks can grow if the bacteria get into a building's water supply, including in shower heads, sink faucets, hot water tanks, heaters and other plumbing systems.

Legionnaires has increased in prevalence over the last decade, reaching a peak of 2.71 cases per 100,000 in 2018, theCDC said. Cases dropped during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic and then rebounded in 2021.

Although most people recover from Legionnaires' disease with antibiotics, certain patients -- including those who are immunocompromised or who suffer from chronic lung diseases --can develop complicationsthat can be fatal.

About one out of every 10 people who develops Legionnaires' disease will die due to complications, according to the CDC. Among those who develop Legionnaires' disease during a stay in a health care facility, about one out of every four people will die, the federal health agency added.

Police responding to pitbull mauling in Tennessee find grandfather and infant dead

A grandfather and his infant granddaughter were pronounced dead after authorities in Tennessee found pitbulls mauling the 3-month-old girl, officials said.

The district attorney general's office for Tennessee's 14th Judicial District said in a news release Wednesday that authorities are still trying to determine the cause of death for James Alexander Smith, 50, and his granddaughter, and whether the mauling occurred after they were already dead.

The prosecutor's office said it isn't clear if criminal charges will be filed in the case.

A 50-year-old man and his 3-month-old granddaughter were found dead after police said they were attacked by their family dogs at their Tullahoma, Tenn., home on Dec. 3, 2025. (via WSMV)

The apparent attack occurred at a residential address in Tullahoma, roughly 75 miles southeast of Nashville. Responding police officers killed the dogs to stop the attack, according to the release.

"Regrettably, it was obvious that both victims were deceased," the release states.

District Attorney Craig Northcutt said the dogs stayed at the home where the mauling occurred but it wasn't clear who they belonged to.

NBC affiliate WSMV of Nashville reportedthat the animals were among seven pitbulls that lived there.

A neighbor, Rebecca Adams, told the station that dogs routinely escaped from the family's yard and chased other neighborhood pets. But she said she'd never seen them be aggressive toward people, the station reported.

The district attorney general's office said investigators are examining the animals' history and "other potential issues that may have contributed to this situation."

According to the release, the other dogs in the home were taken by the local animal control agency.

LeBron James, Luka Dončić out for Lakers' matchup with Celtics on Friday

The Los Angeles Lakers announced LeBron James is out for Friday night's game against the Boston Celtics. Luka Dončić and Marcus Smart were also ruled out.

James' injury designation is right sciatica and left arthritis, while Smart is dealing with a left lumbar muscle strain. Dončić has been away from the team for the birth of his second child in Slovenia.

James is coming off a notable performance Thursday night, when hisincredible 10-point streak — which has stood since 2007 — ended in thrilling fashion. With eight points on the stat sheet, James had the ball in the waning seconds of a tie game against the Raptors, but opted to pass to Rui Hachimura, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer.

James has played in just six of the Lakers' 21 games this season because of sciatica, and his 14.0 average points per game are easily the fewest of his career. His next-lowest total was in his rookie year in 2003-04, when he averaged 20.9 points in 79 games.

Still, the Lakers (16-5) are good for second in the Western Conference behind theone-loss Oklahoma City Thunder.
