If an inflation adjusted £3billion black hole doesn't sound the alarm bell to racing's leaders about the future of racing then nothing will. The latest figures revealed by the Gambling Commission this week were a damning indictment of how apathetic punters have become in relation to this sport. Online racing turnover in betting has fallen from £10bn to £8.37bn inside two years. Consider inflation and it's a decline in real terms of a whopping 26 per cent.
