Adam Scott Was Once Mistaken for Pro Golfer Adam Scott and Given a Hotel Suite: 'Rolled out the Red Carpet' (Exclusive)

Adam Scottbenefited from a case of mistaken identity early in his career.TheSeveranceactor, 52, tells PEOPLE he was once confused for Australian pro golferAdam Scottbecause of their shared name.

"A long time ago, like 20 years ago, I checked into a hotel in New York, and they thought the reservation was for the golfer, Adam Scott," he says, recalling the unexpected mix-up. "I was not of note or a known person at all yet."

Scott, who broke out in 2008'sStep BrothersstarringWill Ferrellbefore becoming a fan favorite on the 2009–2015 NBC sitcomParks and Recreation, says that instead of correcting the hotel, he went along with it.

"They rolled out the red carpet and just made this big fuss over me," Scott says, adding, "[They] brought me back into the manager's office and gave me this suite — the whole time thinking I was the golfer. I didn't correct them. I was like, 'This is great.'"

Scott, who is currently starring in Volvo Cars' four-part seriesThe Family Car: An American Love Storyon Prime Video, says the two have never crossed paths despite their shared name.

"I don't know why we've never met," he says. "It seems like something we should do."

When Scott was younger, inspired by his love for Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, he considered changing his last name to Quardero. Ho toldConan O'Brien in 2017, "I wanted to be one of those Italian, serious actors. My mother's name is Quartararo, which is a beautiful Sicilian name, but it seemed a little long. I shortened it."

But it never came to pass.

Scott tells PEOPLE the mix-up with his golfer name twin also made him briefly ponder a name change.

"Maybe I was just like, 'Uh oh. This guy's getting really, really famous. What am I going to do here?'" Scott says. But he ultimately waved away the idea since he and the other Adam Scott are in different professions: "They're such separate fields, and no one would ever mistake me for an athlete."

Scott isn't the only one in his family to have reaped the benefits of sharing a name with someone famous.Scott says his wife of 20 years,producer Naomi Scott, 53, who shares a name with theSmile 2actress Naomi Scott, has received items meant for the 32-year-old star.

"Every once in a while, we get free clothes sent over that are meant for the actress," Scott reveals.

Unlike Scott and his name twin, his wife and the other Naomi Scott have met in person.

Adam Scott documented the moment the pair came together at Elizabeth Banks'2019 birthday party, calling it "an epic, historic moment forever etched in time."

Reflecting on the unusual circumstance, Scott sees it as something that may happen more often than you think, saying, "With a common last name like Scott, I guess that's sort of bound to happen."
