Meghan Markle Contacted Her Estranged Dad Thomas Markle After His Emergency Leg Amputation

Meghan Markle has made contact with her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

  • Thomas was previously reported to be in the ICU following a "life or death" health emergency that required his leg to be amputated.

  • Prince Harry, according to sources, urged Meghan to speak with her father again amid his own reconciliation with King Charles.

After years of estrangement, Meghan Markle is finally onspeaking terms again with her father, Thomas Markle, following a recent health emergency.

Thomas—who currently lives in the Philippines—checked into the ICU earlier this week to have an emergency surgerythat required him to get his lower left leg and foot amputated after doctors found the presence of a blood clot that cut off his circulation.

Following the procedure, a spokesperson toldPeoplethat the Duchess of Sussex made contact with her father following his life saving treatment. "I can confirm she has reached out to her father," the spokesperson told the magazine on Dec. 5.

Thomas' son (Meghan's half-brother), Tom Markle. Jr., confirmed the details of the procedure in an interview withThe Daily Mail, stating that it was a matter of "life or death."

"My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated," he explained. "One of his doctors said the next two or three days are critical. His left leg has been removed below the knee. They were worried about infection setting in - sepsis or gangrene. The flesh was black and dying."

"It was either 'we have to operate now and remove the leg or he may die,'" Tom added. "It was a life-threatening situation."

Meghan's contact with her father comes after reports ofPrince Harry allegedly urging her to speak with Thomas, amidhis own reconciliation with his father, King Charles.

A source told Rob Shuter'sShuterScoopthat "Harry knows estrangement. He made peace with his dad; now he wants Meghan to have the same chance. He's been saying, 'Don't wait, do it now.'"

Harry's encouragement was described as "soft, compassionate, and very much a 'lead by example' moment," with another insider noting that he's "showing Meghan what reconciliation looks like. And he hopes she takes it."

Meghan hasn't talked with her dad since her royal wedding in 2018, after Thomas staged paparazzi pictures—Thomas has apologized in the time since, but Meghan opened up about her struggle with trusting her father again.

"I said, 'I just need you to tell me and if you tell me the truth, we can help,' and he wasn't able to do that," she told Oprah. "That, for me, has really resonated, especially now as a mother... I look at Archie, I think about this child [on the way], and I genuinely can't imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. I can't imagine it. So it's hard for me to reconcile that."
