Lucky Labrador Lives After Icy Lake Rescue

Sparta Police Department

A Labrador is lucky to be alive after a police officer rescued the dog from a frozen lake in New Jersey this week.

Patrolman Michael Poon of theSparta Police Departmentresponded to a call from an eyewitness who saw two dogs walking on the iced-over Lake Mohawk. The witness made the call when one dog fell in.

Patrolman Poon, thankfully, was already certified in ice rescue and equipped with the department's bright yellow ice rescue gear.

In a statement, the police department wrote, "Without hesitation, he entered the icy water and was able to push the dog back onto the ice, ensuring the animal made it safely to dry land."

Local newsreportshave identified the Labrador as a 10-year-old named Sunkiss. The owner explained that the dog is typically kept in by an electric fence, but somehow found a weak spot in the device to escape.

The Sparta Police Department wants to remind everyone, "This incident serves as an important reminder about the dangers of ice. Ice conditions can change rapidly and are often unpredictable. Please use caution around frozen bodies of water and help us keep everyone safe—people and animals alike."
