Steven Spielberg will return to his alien roots with a new UFO movie, Disclosure Day
The plot of the film, which stars Emily Blunt, James O'Connor and Colin Firth, has been intentionally kept under wraps

No one really knows whatDisclosure Dayis about — and that seems to be exactly whatSteven Spielbergwants.
The acclaimed director's mysterious new UFO movie was first announced in April 2024,perVariety. At the time, details were scarce: The project would be based on Spielberg's original idea, with David Koepp set to write the screenplay. A year and a half later, that hasn't changed. Even the first teaser trailer, released on Dec. 16, revealed almost nothing about the Universal Pictures movie.
Despite the lack of information, fans do know thatEmily Bluntstars as an unnamed Kansas City meteorologist. And she's remaining just as tight-lipped as the film's director, whom she described as her "movie dad" in a November 2025 episode ofEntertainment Weekly'sThe Awardistpodcast.
"It was very goose-bumpy when he called," the actress shared. "He kind of just said, 'We want you to play this part.' And I cried as I got in the car. I mean, I was just so moved."
Blunt added that though filming with Spielberg was "awesome," she "hasn't seen anything" of the movie itself, which is set to release in theaters on June 12, 2026.

Though the exact plot details have been kept under wraps, the synopsis concluded by teasing what is to come: "This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day."

In addition to Blunt, several other notable actors joined the cast ofDisclosure Day.Colin Firth,Colman DomingoandEve Hewsonhave all signed on to undisclosed roles.
Josh O'Connor's character has yet to be revealed but appears to be a protagonist in favor of revealing a large truth to the public, according to the trailer.The History of Soundstar toldDeadlinein May 2025 that working with Spielberg was a "dream."
When asked to describe the film, O'Connor said "it's like old-school Spielberg," and pointed to the Oscar-winning director's iconic movies likeClose Encounters of the Third KindandE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. He added that he didn't have to audition for his role inDisclosure Day.
"He told me he didn't have a script, but he told me the story of the movie and he said, 'Would you like to do it?' " the actor said. "And I sort of feigned, 'Let me think about it.' But obviously ... It was kind of straightforward. He's just the most special person ... He comes up to you, he whispers in your ear like an excited child about an idea, a thought, and it's truly inspiring."

Spielberg is the director ofDisclosure Day, marking his return to the alien genre since his 2005 filmWar of the Worlds. Though space and all its unknowns have been a common theme in the filmmaker's canon, Spielberg said he'd have to have his "own close encounter" to be a true believer.
"I don't believe we're alone in the universe," Spielberg shared during aMarch 2023 interviewwithStephen Colbert. "I think it's mathematically impossible that we are the only intelligent species in the cosmos. I think that's totally impossible."
He added, "At the same time, it also seems impossible that anybody would visit us from 400 million light-years from here – except in the movies."
Is there a trailer forDisclosure Day?
Yes, the first trailer forDisclosure Daywas released in December 2025.
After a narrator reads the film's logline, the trailer cuts to Blunt, who struggles to speak as she prepares to deliver a live weather update. Instead, she emits a strange series of noises, possibly an alien language, during the broadcast, which viewers around the world appear to witness in real time.
O'Connor's character appears next, telling someone that "people have a right to know the truth" while also revealing that he'll be the one to reveal that truth to the whole world — "all at once." Fans also caught a glimpse of Firth's character walking through what appears to be a command center and undergoing a mysterious procedure that dilates his pupils.
Between shots of crop circles, police chases, wild animals appearing in bedrooms and Hewson's character asking whether there "could be others," one thing is clear: the unknown remains unexplained.
