A Customs and Border Protection officer was injured Wednesday morning during a targeted operation in south Los Angeles.

The incident unfolded near the unincorporated neighborhood of Willowbrook and the city of Compton as immigration enforcement officers attempted to arrest William Eduardo Moran Carballo, whom the Department of Homeland Security described as "a violent criminal" from El Salvador.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Carballo attempted to flee from immigration officers and "weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement," DHS said. A federal agent fired shots at Carballo, who was not injured.

A CBP officer involved in the operation was injured during the incident. The extent and nature of the injuries were not immediately clear.

"This situation is evolving, and more information is forthcoming," the agency said in a statement.

Carballo was involved in human smuggling and has two prior arrests for "inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant," according to DHS.

An immigration judge issued a final removal order in 2019, according to the statement.

Los Angeles County Sheriff 's deputies responded to the scene around 7:25 a.m., the department said in a statement.

A damaged BMW sedan appeared to have crashed into a curb and a deployed airbag could be seen on the driver's side.

At the intersection where the incident took place, a man could be heard in a livestreamed video shouting in the background for federal agents to "get out" of the neighborhood, while a group of onlookers gathered near police tape blocking access to the scene.
