Paul McCartney’s Favorite Breakfast Is Surprisingly Simple

Paul McCartney’s simple breakfast includes cereal with berries.

A vegetarian since the 1970s, McCartney often promotes plant-based eating.

The songwriter shared his morning routine in an interview with Amy Poehler.

Attention, podcast lovers—we’ve fallen in love with Good Hang with Amy Poehler. The show delivers plenty of laughs, and it has become an unexpected platform to learn about the secret food world of celebrities. There’s Sandra Bullock, who talked about her love of chicken salad and Greek yogurt. Then, there’s Jennifer Lawrence, who revealed she’s partial to a bag of Doritos when flying. And of course, there’s Poehler herself, who gushed about the Barefoot Contessa’s roast chicken with fennel while in conversation with Ina Garten herself.

Poehler recently had one of her dream guests on the show: former Beatle and current national treasure Paul McCartney. During the conversation, Poehler asks him what the songwriter typically has for breakfast. The answer? Cereal.

“Not too much, just a little bit,” McCartney playfully says. And what does he have with it? Berries, of course—but the Beatle has a very specific routine for the fruit he adds. “Five raspberries. Gotta be five,” he jokes, gesturing to how he evenly spreads them out. Then he adds a handful of blueberries and a sliced strawberry.

Sometimes the simplest meals are the best meals. For other easy breakfast ideas, consider opting for meal prep-worthy egg bites, classic toasts or easy oatmeal bowls.

While it may seem strange to go to a musician for culinary inspiration, McCartney has more expertise in the space than you may realize.

Paul has been a vegetarian since the 1970s and, along with his family, has been a long-time advocate for animal rights and eating a meat-free diet. His late wife, the photographer Linda McCartney, published several vegetarian cookbooks and launched the frozen vegetarian food line Linda McCartney Foods.

In 2009, Paul and two of his daughters, Mary and Stella, started the Meat Free Monday campaign, encouraging people to go meatless just one day a week to reduce greenhouse emissions. And in 2021, the trio published a new cookbook, Linda McCartney’s Kitchen, which puts a plant-based spin on Linda’s best recipes.

Paul has also previously shared other culinary tidbits, telling Stephen Colbert how to make his favorite sandwich. He’s even been on daughter Mary’s cooking show, Mary McCartney Serves It Up, to make his signature “Maccarita” cocktail.
