Cavaliers' Evan Mobley will be sidelined 2-4 weeks due to left calf strain

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley is expected to miss two to four weeks due to a calf strain.

The reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year suffered the injury during Friday night's130-126 comeback victory over the Washington Wizardsin which he had 23 points and 13 rebounds. A postgame evaluation showed tightness in the area before an MRI on Saturday revealed a grade 1 strain.

The fifth-year forward has played in all but one game for the Cavaliers this season and is averaging a career-high 19.1 points per game along with 7.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.6 blocked shots.

The injury is another blow for the Cavaliers, who were the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season but have been dealing with injuries for most of this year.

Cleveland is 15-11 but has dropped five of its last eight games.

Besides Mobley, center Jarrett Allen (finger), Sam Merrill (right hand), Larry Nance Jr. (right calf) and Max Strus (left foot) are dealing with injuries. Allen, who has missed the last six games, is listed as probable for Sunday's game against Charlotte.

QB Philip Rivers added to Colts' roster, reportedly will start

The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Philip Rivers to the 53-man active roster on Saturday, and The Athletic reported he will start his first game in nearly five years in Seattle against the Seahawks.

Also Saturday, the Colts put tackle Braden Smith on the injured reserve list with a concussion and neck injury.

The 44-year-old Rivers has not played since January 2021, a long enough absence to become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was named a semifinalist in the 2026 class, but by being on the active roster for at least one game, he would not be eligible again for another five years from the time of his final game.

He came out of retirement this week as the Colts (8-5) find themselves in a dire situation at quarterback. Starter Daniel Jones is out for the season with an Achilles injury suffered last Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and rookie backup Riley Leonard has a knee issue of his own. Veteran backup Brett Rypien also is in the organization.

Leonard was a full participant in practice the past three days and will back up Rivers, per The Athletic report.

Rivers spent the final season of his first career go-round with the Colts in 2020 following 16 seasons with the Chargers franchise. That season, he threw for more than 4,000 yards for the 12th time in 13 seasons, tossing 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the 11-5 squad.

Now a grandfather, Rivers has spent his time away from the NFL coaching an Alabama high school team and training draft prospects.

An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Rivers ranks seventh in NFL history with 63,440 passing yards and sixth with 421 touchdown passes.

Coach Shane Steichen, with whom Rivers has had a long working relationship, said Friday that Rivers was "pretty impressive to watch" in practice.

The game Sunday would be the 241st straight that Rivers had started while on an active roster. That would be the longest among active players and second all-time for a quarterback, behind only Brett Favre and his 297-game streak.

Jake Matthews of the Atlanta Falcons is next on the list among active players with 191.

NEED TO KNOW

  • James L. Brooks believes his longtime friend and collaborator Jack Nicholson is not done acting

  • Nicholson last appeared on the big screen in Brooks' 2010 movie How Do You Know, which was also Brooks' last movie as a writer-director before releasing Ella McCay

  • "I think he's one of the greatest actors we've ever had," Brooks says of the three-time Academy Award winner

Jack Nicholsonmight not have appeared in a movie sinceJames L. Brooks' 2010 comedyHow Do You Know, but as the Oscar-winning filmmaker tells PEOPLE, Nicholson hasn't "stopped" acting.

Brooks and Nicholson, both 88, built a professional collaboration and personal friendship worthy of Hollywood lore through Nicholson'sOscar-winning performances in Brooks' beloved dramediesTerms of EndearmentandAs Good as It Gets, as well as a small role inBroadcast News.

Although 15 years have passed since Nicholson last stepped onto the big screen inHow Do You Know, Brooks says the movie legend will one day grace it again.

"Oh, I don't think he stopped," Brooks says. "I mean, he's gotten scripts, he's reading them, and I'm sure we'll be seeing them."

(Brooks previously told PEOPLE in a 2023 interview that he believes Nicholson will "get itchy and scratch" his interest in acting once more.)

Brooks repeatedly refers to Nicholson as "the greatest actor of the generation" as he discusses his new film,Ella McCay,and his own directing career, which helped bring Nicholson two of his three career Academy Awards.

The pair first met afterDebra Wingerbrought Nicholson Brooks' script for 1983'sTerms of Endearmentand convinced him to costar in the movie alongside her andShirley MacLaine.

"I didn't have a second choice," Brooks recalls. "I didn't because the guy has to have license from an audience when he walks on, and he was the only [one]. I was a fledgling [director], and I had to get the greatest guy going or not make the movie."

"He's great to work with. I once asked him — I just think it was one of the best things to say to other actors. I asked him, 'What do you do if you're in a scene and the other actor isn't particularly talented?' " Brooks recalls of an interaction with Nicholson. "And he said, 'No, no. Whatever the other actor does is perfect.' And that is not only a gorgeous answer, it's severely true."

He's a good artist; his painting is really really good. He's an athlete and he's well read and he's a fascinating, monumental figure."

What we know about the Brown University shooter

At least two people were killed and eight were woundedin a shooting at Brown Universityon Dec. 13. Law enforcement is still searching for a suspect.

Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara told media in a press briefing that they knew that the shooter was male, and that he was dressed all in black.

Both O'Hara and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that law enforcement was actively searching for the suspect, who left the Barus and Holley engineering building onto Hope Street.

Police are using forensics, as well as looking at surveillance footage and talking to witnesses to develop more information about the suspect.

Here's what we know about the suspect:

Brown University suspected shooter is male, dressed in all black

Little is known about the suspect, but this is what law enforcement shared.

The shooter was:

  • Male

  • Wearing all black

How did the Brown University shooter get into the building?

O'Hara said it was unknown how the suspected shooter entered the Barus and Holley Engineering Building at 184 Hope Street, but it is known that he exited the building onto Hope Street.

Is there only one shooter?

Law enforcement told the media that the information they have right now is that there is only one shooter. However, Smiley cautioned at the start of the press conference that it is a developing situation that may evolve.

What should you do if you might know something about the Brown University suspected shooter?

Smiley urged anything who may know anything about the shooter or the shooting to call 911, particularly if they are a student, or "an adult" on Brown University's campus.

Anyone with security cameras near the Barus and Holley building or on Hope Street, including residents and businesses, should review their camera footage to see if they captured anything around the time of the shooting, officials said.

Was a suspect in custody?

Smiley clarified that there was initial misinformation that a shooter was in custody.

He said the confusion was caused by the fact that they took someone into custody preliminarily. However, that person ended up not being the shooter and was released.

A shooter is not in custody.

This is a developing story.
