Patrick Kane scores 500th career goal in Red Wings game vs. Canucks

Patrick Kanehas joined an exclusive club, becoming the50th player in NHL history to reach 500 goals.

Kane, 37, recorded the huge milestone when he scored twice in theDetroit Red Wings'game against theVancouver Canuckson Thursday, Jan. 8, picking up No. 500 on an empty-net score with 3:53 left.

The goal, in his 1,332nd career game, gave Kane 1,369 points, six shy of breaking Mike Modano's mark for most points (1,374) by a United States-born player.

The Buffalo, New York, native is the fifth U.S.-born player with 500 NHL goals. The others: Joe Mullen (502 in 1,062 games), Jeremy Roenick (513 in 1,363 games), Keith Tkachuk (538 in 1,201 games) and Modano (561 in 1,499, including four in 40 games with the Red Wings).

Kane is a guaranteed first-ballot Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, having established himself as one of the best players in the game since being drafted at No. 1 overall by theChicago Blackhawksin 2007. Kane went on to win the 2008 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year, and during a decade and a half with the team was crucial to winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Kane was named the Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP in 2013.

In 2015-16, he became the first American-born player to win the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player, and that same season he also captured the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's scoring champion.

As the Blackhawks went into a rebuild, Kane OK'ed a trade to theNew York Rangerson Feb. 28, 2023. However, his tenure with his second Original Six franchise was short-lived. Following the Rangers' first-round exit, Kane underwent invasive hip surgery that came with a four-to-six month recovery period.

When he was ready to return, Kane was interested in the Wings, where he would be reunited with former Blackhawks teammate Alex DeBrincat. The Wings were interested to see if Kane could help them get a little more competitive, and the sidesagreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract on Nov. 28, 2023.

Kane came to the Wings with 451 goals and 1,237 points in 1,180 games. Hemade his debut Dec. 7, 2023,and right away showed he still had it at age 35. The Wings re-signed Kane to one-year deals in each of the summers of 2024 and 2025.

Duke, Michigan headline college basketball weekend schedule of games to watch

With football nearly done and conference play in men's college basketball ramping up, there are many more options available for your hoop-viewing entertainment. Our goal here in this weekly space is to help you pick out the most important games.

As fate would have it this week, most of our top choices on Saturday occur in the early afternoon window. That is not to say there won't be any prime-time drama – there usually is in this sport –, but interested fans should definitely be paying attention to the brunch specials. As we always advise since we can't hit every game, keep a close eye on the scoreboard and the remote in easy reach.

Keeping all that in mind, here's our Starting Five for this week.

No. 11 Nebraska at Indiana

Time/TV:Saturday, noon ET, BTN

If Marty MCFly's DeLorean had just delivered you from the mid-1980's to Blloomington's Assembly Hall on this day, you'd undoubtedly be shocked to learn that it is the visiting Cornhuskers, not known historically for achievements on the hardwood, that enters this contest undefeated and flirting with a top-10 ranking. The Hoosiers have been up and down so far this season but are nevertheless dangerous at this storied venue. Nebraska's roster doesn't feature many household names, but the action at both ends of the floor usually goes through Dutch big man Rienk Mast. Indiana will look to Tucker DeVries to match his interior production and hope shooting guard Lamar Wilkerson has a good day at the arc.

No. 22 Tennessee at Florida

Time/TV:Saturday, noon ET, ESPN

The defending NCAA champion Gators ran into a few speedbumps in the 2025 portion of this season. But they knocked off a ranked Georgia squad earlier this week and now look to claim another top-25 victory as the Volunteers come to Gainesville. Tennessee has also battled inconsistency with many new pieces in its lineup, but new arrivals Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Nate Ament have been dominant in stretches. The Gators' new-look backcourt has struggled, but Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon are hard to keep out of the paint.

Wisconsin at No. 1 Michigan

Time/TV:Saturday, 1 p.m. ET, CBS

After a string of impressive blowout victories, perhaps Tuesday night's narrow escape at Penn State was just the wakeup call theWolverinesneeded as they approach the meat of their Big Ten slate. They're happy to be back at home regardless to take on theBadgers. Wisconsin has no appreciably bad losses on its 10-5 ledger but could use some quality wins just the same. Well-traveled Nick Boyd has joined holdover John Blackwell in Madison to give Wisconsin a high-scoring backcourt. They'll have to be on target to avoid having to challenge Michigan's formidable array of rim protectors. Elliot Cadeau has been the facilitator Michigan needed for its system, and any points he provides are a bonus.

No. 25 SMU at No. 6Duke

Time/TV:Saturday, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Blue Devils snapped out of a recent defensive funk earlier this week just in time to clamp down on Louisville in the second half to pick up a key ACC road win. They return home to face the just-ranked Mustangs, whose first action with a number in front of their name didn't go so well Wednesday night in a loss at Clemson. SMU's Kevin 'Boopie' Miller and Jaron Pierre make extensive use of the three-point arc while Samet Yigitoglu anchors the interior. Duke's Cameron Boozer won't be afraid to challenge in the lane, but any scoring help he gets from guards Isaiah Evans and Caleb Foster will be welcome.

No. 16 Illinois at No. 19 Iowa

Time/TV:Sunday, noon ET, Fox

We return to the Big Ten for the Sunday headliner. The Hawkeyes saw their comeback bid at Minnesota fall short in their most-recent outing, and they now hope to take advantage of their own home court against the Fighting Illini. Though Illinois often features a lineup heavy on Eastern Europeans, it's the domestic guard tandem of Keaton Wagler and Kylan Boswell that make the operation work. Iowa's Bennett Stirtz has adjusted quickly to life in the Big Ten, but he could use more shooting help from backcourt mate Tavion Banks.

'Truly special:' Ole Miss run in CFP ends with emotional Fiesta Bowl loss to Miami

GLENDALE, AZ—Mississippi football's Cinderella run has come to an end.

No. 6Ole Misswas defeated byNo. 10 Miami 31-27in theCollege Football Playoffsemifinals on Thursday after the Rebels were unable to muster another comeback win in the program's first-everFiesta Bowlappearance

Yet, as Ole Miss walked off the field at State Farm Stadium while The Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" blasted through the speakers and green and orange confetti fell from the sky, the Rebels had a lot to be proud of following their improbable run.

"God has been so good to me and this team. I wouldn't want to do it with any other people, whether it's coaches, players, people in the offices. It's just been a great ride," said Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who completed 23 of 37 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown in the loss. "This team has sacrificed a lot to get to this point and this season's been bumpy. There's been a lot of things going on and they just kept our focus."

Chambliss added, "It's been truly special."

U TURN!:Fiesta Bowl win finally puts Miami back with national elite

It was also unexpected. Before the announcement of the playoff field, the Rebels were left without head coach Lane Kiffin, who left for LSU on Nov. 30. Just last year, Chambliss was playing Division II football at Ferris State. Coaches that followed Kiffin were also splitting time coaching Ole Miss. And despite the circumstances and turmoil, the Rebels turned in the best season in program history with a record 13 wins and first playoff appearance since the system debuted in 2014.

For a moment, it looked like the Rebels were going to replicate the magic that captivated the nation in their Sugar Bowl win over No. 3 Georgia. They took a 27-24 lead with 3:13 remaining following Chambliss' 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dae'Quan Wright and a successful two-point conversion from Chambliss to Caleb Odom.

It was up to Ole Miss' defense to secure the win. The Rebels defensive unit was on the field a majority of the night as Miami's offense ran 28 more plays and possessed the ball for more than 41 minutes.

The time on the field collectively wore down the Ole Miss defense. Miami put together a 15-play, 75-yard drive that quarterback Carson Beck capped off with a 3-yard, game-winning touchdown to put the Canes up by four points with 18 seconds remaining.

"We didn't play real well on defense all night, but to be up in the fourth and have an opportunity to close it out on that stage, it is something we'll all look back on and get better from," new head coach Pete Golding said. "But I can't tell you how proud I am of this group. They never panicked. They never flinch."

Mississippi wide receiver De'zhaun Stribling (1) walks off the field with teammate Harrison Wallace III (2) after the team's loss to Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the 2026 Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium.

One important stat told much of the story. Miami was 11-of-19 on third down and 2-of-2 on fourth down, while Ole Miss was 2-of-10 on third down.

"On critical third downs, you got to find way to get off the field. We didn't," said Golding. "But I'm really proud of their effort. We could have done some better things from a coaching staff as well, so it is on all of us."

Yet, Ole Miss still had an opportunity to win late. Trailing by four points, Lucas Carneiro's foot couldn't rescue the Rebels. (Carneiro hit four of five field goals, including a 58-yard field goal, the second-longest ever kicked at the Fiesta Bowl.) Ole Miss would need a touchdown to keep their Cinderella season alive.

Ole Miss got to Miami's 35-yard-line with six seconds remaining following a 23-yard and 17-yard completions. Chambliss attempted a Hail Mary pass to Stribling in the left corner of the end zone, but Stribling went down following some contact with Ethan O'Connor and didn't come away with the ball. No penalty was called and time expired.

"Those situations are tough to call ... but there was contact," Golding said of the non-call. "It happens a lot. That's not why we lost the game. We just had a lot of opportunities late. But I think it shows you the resiliency of the team. I mean they didn't care ... They're going to go out there and give it all they got."

With the win, Miami advanced to the national championship game for the first time since the 2002 season and will face either No. 5 Oregon or No. 1 Indiana. Ole Miss, on the other hand, has uncertainty heading into the next season. It will be Golding's first full season as a head coach. Chambliss is seeking an NCAA waiver for a sixth season of eligibility to return to Ole Miss.

"Hopefully, I get to (play) next year," Chambliss said.

Jimmy Kimmel slams 'maniac' Trump for response to ICE shooting

Late-night hosts are weighing in after a37-year-old woman was fatally shotby an immigration agent in Minneapolis.

In his Wednesday monologue,Jimmy Kimmelreacted to the death ofRenee Nicole Good, who earlier in the day wasshot by an ICE agentin her car amid an immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota. Video of the shooting has quickly spread, sparking outrage and protests.

Kimmel criticizedPresident Donald Trumpfor aTruth Social post wherehe alleged Good was acting in a "very disorderly" manner and "viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense."

"This maniac, he isn't just killing people overseas: An ICE agent today shot and killed and unarmed, 37-year-old woman during an ICE operation in Minneapolis," Kimmel said Jan. 7 while introducing the news.

Kimmel said sarcastically that Trump "weighed in with compassion" before reading the president's Truth Social post and objecting to the way he described what happened.

"Now, I saw this video," Kimmel said. "It didn't look like anybody got run over to me. It looked to me like a woman got scared, tried to drive away, and they shot her. That'll be for the court to decide."

Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlinallegedGood "weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them," and said an officer "fired defensive shots."Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noemalso maintained that the officer "followed his training" and "did exactly what he was supposed to do."

But local officials includingMinneapolis Mayor Jacob Freyhavedisputed thisnarrative, with Frey saying at a news conference that while "they are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense," having "seen the video myself I want to tell everybody directly, that is bull----."

<p style=Comedian Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", will resume production after it was pulled off the air Sept. 17, following comments he made in the wake of Charlie Kirk's killing. Kimmel, a frequent critic of Donald Trump, often earned the ire of the president.

Ahead of her appearance onThe Traitors, the 73-year-old matriarch was asked who shedidn'twant to encounter inside the show's famously dramatic castle.

"Maybe some of my sons' adversaries," Donna cheekily saidin a promo videoposted Wednesday,January7. "That could either be on other teams, or it could be coaches, or it could be past girlfriends."

The comment, delivered matter-of-factly, instantly caught attention, specifically the last part. As the mother of NFL starsJason KelceandTravis Kelce, she's watched both sons navigate intense professional rivalries—and, in Travis' case, a highly-public datinglife.

While Jason has largely kept hisromantichistory private prior to marrying his wife,Kylie Kelce, in 2018, Travis' past relationships have played out more publicly. Before his engagement toTaylor Swift, the Kansas City Chiefs star dated influencerKayla Nicoleon and off for five years before they split for good in 2022.

Despite her tongue-in-cheek warning, Donna made it clear she was more excited than nervous. When asked who shewashoping to see onThe Traitors, she named icons likeMartha Stewart,Stevie Nicks, andShaquille O'Neal, to which she said "he would be great."

Tennessee professor awarded $500k after firing over Charlie Kirk comments

Days after being reinstated to his position, a theater professor at a Tennessee university will receive a $500,000 payout as part of a settlement following his firing in September due to comments he made on social media about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

A lawyer for Professor Darren Michael confirmed to The Tennessean that Michael, a professor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, will receive $500,000, as well as reimbursement for therapeutic counseling services, as part of a settlement agreement with the Clarksville university.

David King, Michael's attorney, confirmed that while the settlement closes the chapter on restoring Michael's employment, they are "exploring future options" against those who "interfered with (Michael's) First Amendment rights."

The settlement deal was first reported byWKRN.

Michael was reinstated to his position at the school on Dec. 30, 2025, three monthsafter he was originally fireddue to comments he made on social media about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, after the school admitted to not following its termination policy.

More:Charlie Kirk social media reactions have gotten some commenters fired: What the law says

Kirk, the founder of the conservative Turning Point USA organization, was killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. Following his death, Michael shared an article on his personal social media account titled "Charlie Kirk says gun deaths are 'unfortunately' worth it to keep 2ndAmendment," which discussed controversial comments made by Kirk shortly after the Covenant School shooting.

There was no additional caption written by Michael alongside the shared post.

Two days later, U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, shared a screenshot of his post on her X account.

Blackburn's caption stated: "What do you say, Austin Peay?"

Later that day,the Clarksville university released a statementsaying that Michael had been fired for social media comments that were "insensitive, disrespectful and interpreted by many as propagating justification for unlawful death."

"Such actions do not align with Austin Peay's commitment to mutual respect and human dignity," APSU President Mike Licari said in a statement about Michael's firing. "The university deems these actions unacceptable and has terminated the faculty member."

But in October, the school walked back his termination, stating that the professor was instead suspended and that administration had begun the process of terminating Michael's tenure.

Now, the school is taking a larger step back. Licari announced in a Dec. 30 emailoriginally obtained by Clarksville Nowand later confirmed by The Tennessean, that APSU "did not follow the required tenure termination process in this matter."

"I deeply regret and apologize for the impact this has had on Professor Michael and on our campus community," Licari said, in the email. "I am committed to ensuring that due process and fairness are upheld in all future actions."

In a request for comment regarding the settlement, a spokesperson for APSU confirmed the settlement agreement, but did not comment on the terms.

Michael one of many employees fighting back after wave of Charlie-Kirk-linked firings

Michael is one of many people across Tennessee and the nation seeking First Amendment vindication after commenting on Kirk's legacy in the wake of his death. His case is part of a broader backlash, as conservative activists, influencers and politicians have mounted a largely online campaign pushing for employment consequences against individuals perceived as posting negatively about Kirk.

Notable Tennessee lawsuits on the issue include:

  • Larry Bushart, a retired police officer and National Guardsman living in Lexington, was arrested on Sept. 22 after he posted a picture of a quote from President Donald Trump on a social media comment thread about a Kirk memorial.

He was charged with threats of mass violence and held on a $2 million bond, causing him to lose his job in medical transportation due to his incarceration, until mounting public pressure resulted in his release on Oct. 29.

Larry Bushart, the 61 year old Lexington man arrested after posting a picture on Facebook, with his wife.

He has filed a First Amendment lawsuit against Perry County, Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems and Perry County Sheriff's Investigator Jason Morrow.
