DMX performs onstage with DJ Snake during day 1 of the 2015 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival (Weekend 2) at The Empire Polo Club on April 17, 2015 in Indio, California.

Corrections and clarifications: An earlier version of this story included a comment that was attributed to the DMX estate.

A New York-based bishop plans to honorhip-hop icon DMXin a service over the weekend to "posthumously hold an ordination" for the late rapper.

The event is being led by Bishop Osiris Imhotep of theGospel Cultural Center, who said it will serve as a "symbolic gesture" in a phone interview with USA TODAY on Friday, Jan. 9.

DMX, real name Earl Simmons, diedafter suffering a heart attack in 2021, sending shockwaves through hip-hop and fans around the world.

Osiris' upcoming gathering has been widely reported byseveral outletsand, unbeknownst to him, went viral on social media. He said it's now set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. ET at Christ Episcopal Church in Westchester County, about 30 miles from Manhattan, after the initial venue fell through.

"We're not doing this in conjunction with the estate," Osiris said, adding that he has been in contact with some family members. "It's not a money grab. It's not a political grab. This is community service honoring Earl 'DMX' Simmons, simple. It's a religious service."

DMX:Rap legend, a pinnacle of the '90s and 2000s hip-hop scene, dies at 50 after heart attack

DMX included his faith in his music

DMX is highly regarded for his legendary contributions to hip-hop in the 1990s and 2000s. In his work and throughout his career, the rap star spoke unabashedly about hisupbringing, his struggles with addiction, and most notably, his faith.

His multi-platinum selling 1998 debut album, "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot," includes a "Prayer (Skit)" where he openly talks to God, "I come to you hungry and tired, you give me food and let me sleep/ I come to you weak, you give me strength and that's deep/ You call me a sheep and lead me to green pastures/ Only asking that I keep the focus in between the chapters."

DMX performs at The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 2001 at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, Florida.

Osiris said DMX's 2006 song, "Lord Give Me a Sign," resonated with him.

"I really loved his ministry, and it inspired me to do my thesis on hip-hop pastoral care, his life, his songs, his struggles, his family," he said. "We recognize his ministerial status as a true faith-given individual."

In aninterview on "The Breakfast Club" in 2016,the "Slippin'" emcee revealed his aspirations to become a pastor: "Maybe I am already, I don't know, but that's definitely the final destination or a destination," DMX said. "You never know how far God is going to allow me to get or how much he's going to let me do or how many people he's going to allow me to reach."

Washington National Opera bows out of Kennedy Center

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington National Opera announced Friday that it will move performances away fromthe Kennedy Centerin another high-profile departure following President Donald Trump's takeover of the U.S. capital's leading performing arts venue.

The opera said it will seek to end its affiliation with the Kennedy Center through an "amicable transition" and will return to operating independently. It cited financial constraints imposed after Trump fired the Kennedy Center's board and installed allies to oversee it.

The opera will reduce its spring season and move performances to other venues "to ensure fiscal prudence and fulfill its obligations for a balanced budget," the opera said in a statement.

The statement did not mention Trump or the decision by the Kennedy Center's new board toadd the president's nameto the venue. ThoughCongress still formally calls itthe John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, thebuilding's exteriorand website now refer to it as the Trump Kennedy Center.

Ric Grenell, a Trump aide serving as the Center's interim executive director, said the venue has spent millions to support the Washington National Opera but it continues to operate at a deficit.

Parting ways will provide "the flexibility and funds to bring in operas from around the world and across the U.S.," Grenellwrote on X.

Artists ranging from "Hamilton" creatorLin-Manuel Mirandato rock star Peter Wolf have called off events at the Kennedy Center sincePresident Donald Trumpousted the previous leadership early last year and arranged for himself to head the board of trustees. The December rebranding as the Trump Kennedy Center led to a new wave of cancellations.

Opera officials said the Center's new business model requires productions to be fully funded in advance, which it said is "incompatible with opera operations." Ticket sales cover only a fraction of production costs, and opera companies rely on grants and donations to make up the difference but can't secure them years in advance, when they're planning productions.

The business model also doesn't accommodate the opera's model practice of using revenue from popular works to subsidize lower-grossing, lesser-known works, the opera said.

"I have been proud to be affiliated with a national monument to the human spirit, a place that has long served as an inviting home for our ever-growing family of artists and opera lovers," said Francesca Zambello, the Washington National Opera's artistic director for the past 14 years.

She vowed to continue offering a variety of shows, "from monumental classics to more contemporary works."

Late Friday, WNO productions of "Treemonisha," "The Crucible" and "West Side Story" were still listed on the Kennedy Center website.

Death cap mushrooms, also called Amanita phalloides. (Anne Pringle)

A California man died last weekend afterconsuming "death cap" mushrooms— the third such death in the state since November.

California has been contending with an unusual spate of poisonings from foraged mushrooms: 35 cases were recorded from Nov. 18 to Jan. 4. In an average year, fewer than five would be expected.

"The numbers we're dealing with this year are comparatively off the charts," said Sheri Cardo, a communications specialist for the state health department.

The problemprompted a warningfrom the health department on Dec. 5, in which officials strongly discouraged residents from consuming any foraged mushrooms. The advisory described clusters of poisoning cases around Monterey and the San Francisco Bay Area. The affected patients had mistaken toxic varieties for mushrooms that are safe to eat, the health department said.

The most recent death was in Sonoma County — the first from wild mushrooms there this season, according to the county health department.

Dr. Michael Stacey, the interim health officer for Sonoma County, instructed residents to only purchase mushrooms from trusted grocery stores and retailers, adding that some "death cap" mushrooms closely resemble edible varieties.

"Early rains and a mild fall have led to profusion of the toxic death cap mushrooms in Northern California," Stacey saidin a press releaseon Thursday.

Last month, the California Poison Control System said that some of the people who had been poisoned by death caps spoke Spanish and might have relied on foraging practices developed outside the United States. Heather Hallen-Adams, the toxicology chair of the North American Mycological Association, previously told NBC News that death cap mushrooms look similar to other species in its genus, Amanita, that are often collected in Mexico and are safe to eat.

The toxin in death cap mushrooms, called amatoxin, can damage the kidneys, liver and gastrointestinal tract if ingested. Symptoms of amatoxin poisoning can take up to 24 hours to appear and include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. More severe reactions, like fatal liver damage, can develop within two to three days.

Hallen-Adams said about 90% of fatal poisonings from mushrooms are due to amatoxin poisoning.

Small amounts of the death cap mushroom — a volume as small as a standard sugar cube — can be a fatal dose.

Three patients in California with wild mushroom poisoning have required liver transplants, according to the health department.

The death cap mushroom, also called Amanita phalloides, is an invasive species that originated in Europe and came to California in the 1930s, most likely with imported nursery trees. In California, it typically grows near oak trees and occasionally pines. The mushroom is usually a few inches tall but can grow larger and has white gills, a pale yellow or green cap and a ring around its stalk.

U.S. Poison Centers typically receive around 52 calls a year about amatoxin poisoning, according to Hallen-Adams, though not all cases are reported to the centers.

This season's risk might be winding down in California, according to Mike McCurdy, president of the Mycological Society of San Francisco. A frequent mushroom collector, McCurdy said he had seen far fewer death cap mushrooms during recent outings, whereas he saw hundreds of them during a two- to three-hour walk in Sonoma County earlier this winter.

On a recent walk near Lafayette, California, he found only one, he said: "I think we're getting close to the end."

OC Bobby Petrino officially hired at North Carolina

North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick made the hiring of veteran coach Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator official on Friday.

News began to spread before Christmas that Petrino was headed for Chapel Hill, where he will be charged with revamping an offense that averaged only 19.3 points and 288.8 yards of total offense per game. Their scoring average was 16th in the 17-team Atlantic Coast Conference, and the Tar Heels finished last in total offense.

Belichick fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens after North Carolina finished 4-8 (2-6) in 2025.

"I'm extremely excited to join Coach Belichick and the Carolina football program," Petrino, 64, said Friday in a school news release. "This is an incredible opportunity to work with one of the best at a storied institution. I cannot wait to get started in Chapel Hill alongside this coaching staff and student-athletes."

Belichick cited Petrino's "proven record" in announcing the addition.

"We are fortunate to add an elite coaching talent in Bobby to our staff," Belichick said. "He brings an extensive background and a proven record of success on offense at every level of football. Bobby has consistently built great offenses everywhere he has been, and we look forward to having him work with our program."

Petrino held numerous college and NFL roles before serving as the Louisville head coach in 2003-06.

After resigning from the Atlanta Falcons 13 games into his lone season coaching them in 2007, Petrino served as the head coach at Arkansas (2008-11), Western Kentucky (2013), Louisville again (2014-18) and Missouri State (2020-22). He had an unceremonious departure from Arkansas after a motorcycle accident and an inappropriate relationship with an assistant.

That did not stop Arkansas from bringing him back as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach ahead of the 2024 season. When the Razorbacks fired head coach Sam Pittman on Sept. 28, 2025, Petrino became the interim coach and was considered a candidate for the full-time job.

Petrino has an overall record of 119-63 as a head coach.

Arkansas instead hired away Ryan Silverfield from Memphis and did not retain Petrino, who lost all seven games he coached.

Still, the problem at Arkansas was not its offense. The Razorbacks were 15th in the nation in total offense (454.8 yards) and 23rd in scoring offense (32.9 points).
