Strike by resident doctors in England to go ahead after rejecting government's offer

LONDON, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Resident doctors in England voted to reject the government's latest offer on working conditions, the British Medical Association union said on Monday, confirming that a five-day ‌strike planned for this week would go ahead.

The doctors' union - which represents resident doctors ‌who are qualified practicians making up nearly half of the medical workforce - will stage a walkout from Wednesday as part of a series of strike actions that have taken place earlier this year over pay and working conditions.

"Tens of thousands ‌of frontline doctors have come together to say 'no' to what is clearly too little, too late," BMA chair ‍Jack Fletcher said in a statement.

"This week's strike is still entirely avoidable – the Health Secretary should now work with us in the short time we have left to come up with a credible offer to end ‌this jobs crisis and avert the real terms pay cuts he is pushing in 2026," Fletcher said, adding that the union is willing to work to find a solution.

Britain's health department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The offer put made by the government last Wednesday did not include new pay terms, something the BMA has been campaigning for since the Labour party won last year's election.

The strike will add pressure to an already stretched healthcare service ‍after NHS England warned last week that hospitals were facing the "worst-case scenario" from a wave of a super flu.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged the doctors to call off the strike, saying they were "being irresponsible," while ‌Streeting has repeatedly been critical of the union's decision.

Interstellar comet keeps its distance as it makes its closest approach to Earth

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astray comet from another starswings past Earth this week in one last hurrah before racing back toward interstellar space.

Discovered over the summer, the comet known as3I/Atlaswill pass within 167 million miles (269 million kilometers) of our planet on Friday, the closest it gets on itsgrand tourof the solar system.

NASA continues to aim its space telescopes at the visiting ice ball, estimated to be between 1,444 feet (440 meters) and 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) in size. But it's fading as it exits, so now's the time for backyard astronomers to catch it in the night sky with their telescopes.

The comet will come much closer to Jupiter in March, zipping within 33 million miles (53 million kilometers). It will be the mid-2030s before it reaches interstellar space, never to return, said Paul Chodas, director of NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies.

It's the third known interstellar object to cut through our solar system. Interstellar comets like 3I/Atlas originate in star systems elsewhere in the Milky Way, while home-grown comets like Halley's hail from the icy fringes of our solar system.

A telescope in Hawaii discovered the first confirmed interstellar visitor in 2017. Two years later, an interstellar comet was spotted by a Crimean amateur astronomer. NASA's sky-surveying Atlas telescope in Chile spotted comet 3I/Atlas in July while prowling for potentially dangerous asteroids.

Scientists believe the latest interloping comet, also harmless, may have originated in a star system much older than ours, making it a tantalizing target.

US and Ukraine target 1,000-vessel 'dark fleet' smuggling sanctioned oil worldwide

A 1,000-strong "dark fleet" of rogue oil tankersskirting sanctionshas emerged as a new target for the U.S. and Ukraine, a senior maritime intelligence analyst claims.

Michelle Wiese Bockmann warned the aging fleet poses geopolitical risks and threats of $1 billion oil spills, with the recent U.S. seizures in Venezuela and Ukrainian drone strikes in the Black Sea marking a turning point for both nations in their efforts.

"There are about 1,000 vessels worldwide that are trading sanctioned crude tankers containing sanctioned Iranian, Venezuelan and Russian oil," Bockmann told Fox News Digital.

"These vessels are a lifeline for these regimes, because they're used for shipping oil to fund the war in Ukraine, and also give money to the illicit Maduro regime," she added.

Iran Backs Maduro To Keep Latin America Foothold As Trump Increases Pressure On Venezuela

A satellite image shows the very large crude carrier (VLCC) Skipper.

"This is a brand-new problem for the U.S., and now Ukraine has signaled they are going to target these vessels the same way," she said. "There is a new strategy to deal with this dark fleet, which is the lifeline of sanctioned oil revenues, and now under attack by the U.S. and Ukraine. The strategy is all to counter what we callgray-zone aggression."

Recent Ukrainian naval drone strikes have disabled several tankers in the Black Sea, including the Dashan, part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet that Ukraine says helps Moscow export oil in defiance of sanctions, according to Reuters.

"It is dangerous and could be interpreted as a form of gray-zone aggression in order to continue to keep oil revenue flowing," Bockmann said.

"This is all a billion-dollar oil spill catastrophe waiting to happen," she added, pointing to theenvironmental and navigational risksposed by poorly maintained, uninsured ships.

Dashan under attack.

She said a subset of "about 350 to 400 vessels at any one time are not only sanctioned but falsely flying flags, which is dangerous," because false registration leaves vessels stateless and uninsured, putting crews at risk.

"This is a huge issue for maritime safety, it's a menace to the environment, and it entails crew welfare," Bockmann said.

These vessels, she said, are typically "elderly" and used solely forsanctioned oil trades. Many also "manipulate AIS" to show they are in one place when they are actually elsewhere.

Dashan in the water.

"They use false flagging, but also spoofing and manipulating its AIS to show it's in one place when it's not. These vessels have also gone tofraudulent registriesthat don't exist, which means they have no insurance," she said. "Their certificates of seaworthiness are invalid, and they have relied on international maritime conventions to have what's called the 'right of innocent passage' so they can't get intercepted."

Bockmann said U.S. forces have used legal tools including Article 110 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which allows boarding of stateless vessels, to stop these ships.

"It's my belief that they used Article 110, and they got on board that vessel, and they were absolutely entitled to remove that vessel from global trade," she said.

Venezuela Accuses Us Of 'Piracy' After Seizing Massive Oil Tanker

In the Caribbean, U.S. forces recently seized the tanker Skipper, sanctioned in 2022 and found to be masking its location, under a federal warrant as part of a broader campaign to disrupt illicit oil shipping.

"The recent Venezuelan tanker was carrying 1.8 million barrels of oil uninsured, so that's a billion-dollar maritime disaster waiting to happen," Bockmann said.

As reported by Fox News Digital, Dec. 12 saw Attorney GeneralPam Bondiframe the U.S. seizure of a Venezuelan crude tanker as a sanctions-enforcement action rooted in a federal court warrant.

Meanwhile, in the Black Sea, Ukraine targeted multiple alleged "shadow fleet" tankers with sea drones, according to Reuters.

"The three tankers that have been targeted by Ukraine are all in ballast, which means that they weren't carrying oil," Bockmann said.

"That was carefully chosen, and they were also falsely flagged, just like in the recent case of the three tankers attacked in Ukraine. That flag was Gambia. In the U.S. case of Skipper, the flag was Guyana," Bockmann said.

Fox News Digital's Morgan Phillips contributed to this report.

Patrick Mahomes tears ACL, out for remainder of lost 2025 Chiefs season

TheKansas City Chiefs' postseason hopes are done, and so is Patrick Mahomes' season.

Mahomes suffered an injury to his left knee in the final two minutes of Sunday'sloss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and the injury will keep Mahomes out for the remainder of the year.

TheChiefsannounced after Sunday's game that Mahomes had suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, and said they are exploring surgical options. Further specifics on his recovery, or a timeline for his return, are not yet known.

Mahomes, who had been dealing with injury concerns related to the knee all season, apparently hyperextended the knee as he attempted to lead the Chiefs to a late comeback win. He would lay on the turf at Arrowhead Stadium for several minutes as teammates knelt nearby, and then was helped to the locker room.

Mahomes left knee buckles and he has left the gamepic.twitter.com/a0dkUXynjE

— Rate the Refs (@Rate_the_Refs)December 14, 2025

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew entered the game having thrown no passes all season, and quickly threw a game-ending interception.

Afterward, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the injury "didn't look good." With the loss to the Chargers eliminating the Chiefs from the playoffs for the first time since 2014, there was no pressing need to bring Mahomes back this season, regardless of the extent of the injury.

Mahomes addressed the injury in a social media post on Sunday afternoon, and vowed to return.

Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it's hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back…

— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes)December 14, 2025

The Chiefs struggled all season long with injuries, and Mahomes himself was far from his MVP-winning, Super Bowl-level best. His 63.1 completion percentage was the lowest of his career as a starter. His 22 touchdowns are the fewest of his career, albeit with three games still to play. The 2025 season also marked his worst in Passer Rating and second-worst in Quarterback Rating of his career.

Mahomes is in the sixth year of a 10-year, $450 million contract. He last won the NFL's Most Valuable Player award in 2022, and placed in the top 10 the last two seasons. Under Mahomes' leadership, the Chiefs had reached the AFC championship in all seven of his years as a starter, playing in five Super Bowls and winning three.

But Sunday's loss, the team's third straight, officially knocked them out of the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Minshew will presumably lead the Chiefs the rest of the way this season, but it's unclear who will start in Mahomes' place next fall assuming he's still recovering from his upcoming surgery.

While Mahomes' NFL career is far from over, the dominant stretch the Chiefs have been on over the last near-decade has now come to an end.

Philip Rivers of the Indianapolis Colts passes against the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday. (Steph Chambers / Getty Images)

Playing his first NFL game in 1,800 days, 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers threw a touchdown Sunday for the Indianapolis Colts while nearly upsetting a Super Bowl contender.

Rivers completed 18 of his 27 passes for 120 yards and led a drive that put the Colts ahead with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter before Seattle kicked a go-ahead field goal to win 18-16.

Rivers and the Colts got the ball back for one final opportunity 70 yards from the end zone with 11 seconds to go in regulation, but the drive's first play was also its last. A deep throw by Rivers down the middle of the field went over his intended receiver's head and was intercepted, sealing Seattle's win.

Rivers, a father of 10 and a grandfather, started for Indianapolis weeks after being named a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and just five days after having come out of retirement to sign with the Colts after injuries had devastated their quarterbacks.

Rivers joined Tom Brady, Vinny Testaverde, Warren Moon, Steve DeBerg and George Blanda as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to play at age 44 or older.

An afterthought in the preseason, Indianapolis had transformed into a surprise Super Bowl contender after a 7-1 start, only to lose four of its next five games. In its most recent defeat last week, it also lost starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

With injuries hobbling its other quarterbacks, Indianapolis turned to an unusual stopgap measure in Rivers — who is older than 13 of the NFL's 32 head coaches, including Colts coach Shane Steichen — to salvage its playoff aspirations. The franchise and Rivers had familiarity: Rivers spent the first 16 seasons of his career with San Diego before he played his final year with Indianapolis in 2020. He ranked fifth all-time in passing yardage and passing touchdowns in NFL history when he retired.

Competing at a high level is no longer a rarity for over-40 athletes, with Tom Brady, LeBron James and even downhill skier Lindsey Vonn all remaining world-class well after having exited their prime. Yet Rivers' return was extraordinary because of the length of his break. He had coached a high school team in Fairhope, Alabama, in retirement, and members of the team were shown cheering Rivers on during Sunday's Week 15 matchup in Seattle.

There was little time for Rivers to ease into his first game since Jan. 9, 2021, while he faced a Seahawks defense that ranks among the NFL's best. Yet Rivers converted a third down on his first drive, and late in the second quarter he threw his 422nd career touchdown.

After having led for much of the game, Indianapolis trailed 15-13 in the fourth quarter when Rivers trotted onto the field with 2:21 left to try to add to his career total of 36 game-winning drives.

He threw completions for 16 and 3 yards to help Indianapolis get into range for kicker Blake Grupe, who made a career-long 60-yard kick with 47 seconds left to give Indianapolis a 16-15 lead.

That was enough time remaining, however, for Seattle to mount its own drive, which ended with a 56-yard kick to take back the lead, 18-16, with 18 seconds to play.
