JuJu Watkins attends USA Basketball camp and focuses on leadership during ACL rehab

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — JuJu Watkins made the most of her brief trip to the USA Basketball senior national team camp.

While she wasn't able to participate in the on-court activities because the Southern California star is still recovering from an ACL injuryshe suffered last March, Watkins saw the invitation as an opportunity to grow her leadership abilities.

"It's enough just being (here) and feeling the energy, that's mostly what I've picked up on," the reigningAP Player of the Yearsaid. "Hearing everyone's voices, the communications, the leadership, it's something that you can see automatically. It brings up your standards, so I'll definitely be taking some of these lessons back to USC to continue to grow as a leader and a player."

Watkins was able to get up a few stationary shots with coaches after practice was over, which was a positive step in her rehab.

"Whatever I can do, I am trying to maximize that," she said.

Watkins hadannounced in Septemberthat she would miss the entire college season to give her full attention to rehab. She said Friday that she had tried to put off the decision whether to play for as long as possible, but in the end she "had to come to terms with where I was at. Getting over that mental curve has been the biggest thing."

U.S. coach Kara Lawson said it was important that Watkins, who will be a vital part of the team in the future, to attend the camp.

"We wanted her here ... I think you can see that there's a great deal of talent there, and that's somebody that is going to be in the conversation, obviously, in the future," Lawson said. "We were really intentional about inviting her here and having her be a part of it. I think there's great value in having her observe and be around the group, and then just the connectivity."

Watkins was only around on Thursday and Friday because she returned to Los Angeles for the 16th-ranked Trojans' game against No. 1 UConn on Saturday.

Being at camp gave her a chance to connect in person with Paige Bueckers. Watkins said Bueckers has been great in helping her with her ACL rehab. Bueckers missed the 2022-23 season with her own ACL tear.

"She's been checking on me every couple months. Great person," Watkins said. "So to be here with her, and see her kill it, and see her on the other side of it, it's very inspiring. She's just helped me throughout the process of sending the texts, checking in on me, that's meant a great deal."

Watkins said she had always wanted to be part of the senior team. The Olympics are in her hometown of Los Angeles in 2028.

"It's always been a dream of mine to be in this atmosphere, so to live out those dreams, even though it looks different, I'm still blessed to be here," she said.

Bowl game schedule today: Previewing the college football LA Bowl matchup on Dec. 13

If it seems like the regular season incollege footballjust ended, well, it did. But that doesn't mean we can't jump right intothe bowl season, right?

The first bowl teams take the field at SoFi Stadium Saturday evening. The game matches two schools that share a bit of history with a former coach in common. In the spirit of the holidays, it might also be seen as a visit from the ghosts of Pac-12 past and future, with a former conference member squaring off against a team bound for the newly reconstructed league next season.

Here's a look at the participants and what you need to know to take it in.

LA Bowl:Boise Statevs. Washington

Time/TV:Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, ABC, Boise, Idaho.

Why watch:One might call this the Chris Petersen Bowl, name checking the coach who helped make Boise a perennial winner before heading to Seattle to coach theHuskiesand lead them to the College Football Playoff. They've met on the field six times, with Washington holding a 4-2 series advantage. As far as this meeting is concerned, it will be a quick turnaround for theBroncos, fresh off repeating as Mountain West champions with a win against UNLV eight days earlier. The Huskies' Big Ten campaign was a mixed bag with occasional offensive outages among some explosive performances. Boise State was happy to get QB Maddux Madsen back for the MWC finale. Washington's defense, backed by DB Alex McLaughlin, could prove tougher to solve. Huskies QB Demond Williams has thrown for 21 TDs and run for six more. He must know the whereabouts of DB Ty Benefield, the Broncos' defensive leader, at all times.

Why it could disappoint:As mentioned, Boise is on much shorter rest, and the Broncos haven't fared especially well this season against strong out-of-conference competition. Washington struggled against high-end defenses, so we'll soon learn if Boise qualifies in that category.

Reports: South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers set to return to Gamecocks in 2026

LaNorris Sellers will be back for a fourth season at South Carolina.

The preseason first-team all-SEC quarterback is set to come back in 2026,according tomultiple reports.Sellers was seen as a potential top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft before the season, but South Carolina underachieved in 2025.

The Gamecocks went 4-8 as the offensive line struggled against an extremely tough schedule. Sellers was 178-of-293 passing for 2,437 yards and just 13 TDs with eight interceptions across 12 games. Thanks to sacks, he also rushed for just 270 yards and five touchdowns.

A year ago, Sellers was the breakout star of the SEC. In 2024, he was 196-of-299 passing for 2,534 yards and 18 TDs with seven interceptions. Thirteen of those touchdowns came over South Carolina's last six games of the season.

He also rushed for 674 yards and seven scores. He rushed 16 times for 166 yards in the Gamecocks' upset of Clemson to end the season. That was South Carolina's sixth win in a row before the Gamecocks lost to Illinois in the Citrus Bowl.

The 2024 USC offense was coordinated by Dowell Loggains, and the team's success helped lead to Loggains getting the head coaching job at Appalachian State. Coach Shane Beamer promoted Mike Shula to replace Loggains, and Shula didn't even last the entire season.

Shula was fired nine games into the season as South Carolina was 3-6. Earlier this week, the school announced that longtime college football assistant Kendal Briles would be the team's offensive coordinator and former Penn State running backs coach Stan Drayton would be the assistant head coach for offense and also the team's running backs coach.

Briles, the son of former Baylor coach Art Briles, has coached at five different schools since his dad was fired in 2016. He's been the offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic, Houston, Florida State and Arkansas before spending the last three seasons at TCU.

What to know about King Charles III's cancer treatment and his message to the public

LONDON (AP) — Medics and health charities on Saturday praisedKing Charles IIIfor giving a publicupdate on his cancer treatment, saying his call for people to get tested for the disease could save lives.

In a strikingly personal video statement, the British monarch acknowledged that a cancer diagnosis can feel "overwhelming," but said catching the disease early brings "the precious gift of hope."

Here's what to know about the king's condition and his message.

A royal health update

The 77-year-old king said in a statement broadcast Friday that his treatment schedule will be reduced in the new year, "thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to 'doctors' orders.'"

He encouraged others to take advantage of screening programs such as those for breast, bowel and cervical cancer offered by Britain's public health service.

"Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives," the king said in the statement aired during a "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon on TV station Channel 4. He said catching the disease early had allowed him "to continue leading a full and active life even while undergoing treatment."

Charles has received outpatient treatment for almost two years. Buckingham Palace did not say the king is in remission, but that his treatment is moving to a "precautionary phase" and his condition will be monitored to ensure his continued recovery.

Diagnosed in 2024

Charles announced in February 2024 that he had beendiagnosed with cancer, and, in a break from centuries of secrecy about royal health, he has since spoken about the illness, using his story to promote cancer awareness and treatment.

The openness has limits, though. The king has not disclosed what type of cancer he has or what kind of treatment he is receiving. The palace saidit was an intentional decisiondesigned to ensure his message reaches the widest possible audience.

The king's cancer was discovered after treatment for an enlarged prostate. While doctors ruled out prostate cancer, tests revealed "a separate issue of concern," palace officials said last year.

Charlessuspended his public appearancesfor about two months after his diagnosis. Since returning to the public eye, he has visited cancer treatment centers across the country and shared stories with fellow patients.

Setting an example

British cancer charities said the number of people seeking information about cancer jumped after the king revealed he was undergoing treatment.

"I know from my own experience that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming," he said in his video statement. "Yet I also know that early detection is the key that can transform treatment journeys, giving invaluable time to medical teams – and, to their patients, the precious gift of hope."

Gemma Peters, chief executive at the charity Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "We are incredibly grateful to His Majesty the King for continuing to share his experience of cancer with such openness and honesty."

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of the charity Cancer Research UK, wished the king well and said that "when public figures speak openly about their cancer diagnosis, it can prompt others to check in on their health."

Broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, the king's authorized biographer, said the statement was "a remarkable thing for a monarch to do."

"It takes guts, and the fact that he came out and did that will save lives," Dimbleby said.

The Princess of Wales, who announced her own cancer diagnosis six weeks after her father-in-law, has also given updates on her treatment. Kate, 43, announced in January that her cancer is in remission.

Belarus frees Nobel Prize laureate Bialiatski, opposition figure Kolesnikova as US lifts sanctions

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Belarusian authorities on Saturday freed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, key opposition figure Maria Kolesnikova and other prominent political prisoners, a human rights group confirmed.

Their release comes as authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko seeks to improve relations with Washington. The U.S. earlier on Saturday announced lifting sanctions on the country's potash sector. In exchange, Lukashenko pardoned a total of 123 prisoners, the Belta state news agency reported.

A close ally of Russia, Minsk has faced Western isolation and sanctions for years. Lukashenkohas ruled the nationof 9.5 million with an iron fist for more than three decades, and the country has beenrepeatedly sanctioned by Western countriesboth for its crackdown on human rights and for allowing Moscow to use its territory in the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Belarus has released hundreds of prisoners since July 2024.

John Coale, the U.S. special envoy for Belarus, announced the lifting of sanctions on potash after meeting Lukashenko in Minsk on Friday and Saturday.

Speaking with journalists, Coale described the two-day talks as "very productive," Belarus' state news agency Belta reported Saturday. He said that normalizing relations between Washington and Minsk was "our goal."

"We're lifting sanctions, releasing prisoners. We're constantly talking to each other," he said, according to Belta. He also said that the relationship between the countries was moving from "baby steps to more confident steps" as they increased dialogue.

Bialiatski and Kolesnikova among those released

Pavel Sapelka, an advocate with the Viastan rights group, confirmed to The Associated Press that Bialiatski and Kolesnikova were released from prison.

Human rights advocate Bialiatski won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, along with the prominent Russian rights group Memorial and Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties.

Bialiatski, awarded the prize while in jail awaiting trial, was later convicted of smuggling as well as financing actions that violate public order — charges widely denounced as politically motivated — and sentenced to 10 years in 2023.

Kolesnikova was a key figure in themass protests that rocked Belarus in 2020,and is a close ally of an opposition leader in exile,Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

Kolesnikova, known for her close-cropped hair and trademark gesture of forming a heart with her hands, became an even greater symbol of resistance when Belarusian authorities tried to deport her in September 2020. Driven to the Ukrainian border, she briefly broke away from security forces at the frontier, tore up her passport and walked back into Belarus.

The 43-year-old professional flautist was convicted in 2021 on charges including conspiracy to seize power and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Others who were freed

Others who were released, according to Viasna, include Viktar Babaryka — an opposition figure who had sought to challenge Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election, widely seen as rigged, before being convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges he rejected as political.

Viasna said that the group's imprisoned advocates, Valiantsin Stefanovic and Uladzimir Labkovich, and prominent opposition figure Maxim Znak, were released as well.

Most of them were brought into Ukraine, Franak Viachorka, Tsikhanouskaya's senior adviser, told the AP.

"I think Lukashenko decided to deport people to Ukraine to show that he is in control of the situation," Viachorka said.

Eight or nine others, including Bialiatski, will be brought to Lithuania on Saturday, and more prisoners will be taken to Lithuania in the next few days, Viachorka said.

Ukrainian authorities confirmed that Belarus handed over 114 civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said five of them were Ukrainian nationals.

Lukashenko wants a rapprochement with the West

The last time U.S. officials met with Lukashenko in September 2025, Washington announced easing some of the sanctions against Belarus while Mink released more than 50 political prisoners into Lithuania. With that September release, the number of prisoners freed by Belarus since July 2024 exceeded 430, in what was widely seen as an effort at a rapprochement with the West.

"The freeing of political prisoners means that Lukashenko understands the pain of Western sanctions and is seeking to ease them," Tsikhanouskaya told the AP on Saturday.

She added: "But let's not be naive: Lukashenko hasn't changed his policies, his crackdown continues and he keeps on supporting Russia's war against Ukraine. That's why we need to be extremely cautious with any talk of sanctions relief, so that we don't reinforce Russia's war machine and encourage continued repressions."

Tsikhnouskaya also described European Union sanctions against Belarusian potash fertilizers as far more painful for Minsk that those imposed by the U.S, saying that while easing U.S. sanctions could lead to the release of political prisoners, European sanctions should push for long-term, systemic changes in Belarus and the end of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Sanctions have hit the key Belarus export hard

Belarus, which previously accounted for about 20% of global potash fertilizer exports, has faced sharply reduced shipments since Western sanctions targeted state producer Belaruskali and cut off transit through Lithuania's Klaipeda port, the country's main export route.

"Sanctions by the U.S., EU and their allies have significantly weakened Belarus's potash industry, depriving the country of a key source of foreign exchange earnings and access to key markets," Anastasiya Luzgina, an analyst at the Belarusian Economic Research Center BEROC, told AP.

"Minsk hopes that lifting U.S. sanctions on potash will pave the way for easing more painful European sanctions; at the very least, U.S. actions will allow discussions to begin," she said.

The latest round of U.S.-Belarus talks also touched on Venezuela, as well as Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Belta reported.

Coale told reporters that Lukashenko had given "good advice" on how to address the Ukraine war, saying that Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin were "longtime friends" with "the necessary level of relationship to discuss such issues."

"Naturally, President Putin may accept some advice and not others," Coale said.
