What we know about the Brown University shooter

At least two people were killed and eight were woundedin a shooting at Brown Universityon Dec. 13. Law enforcement is still searching for a suspect.

Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara told media in a press briefing that they knew that the shooter was male, and that he was dressed all in black.

Both O'Hara and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that law enforcement was actively searching for the suspect, who left the Barus and Holley engineering building onto Hope Street.

Police are using forensics, as well as looking at surveillance footage and talking to witnesses to develop more information about the suspect.

Here's what we know about the suspect:

Brown University suspected shooter is male, dressed in all black

Little is known about the suspect, but this is what law enforcement shared.

The shooter was:

  • Male

  • Wearing all black

How did the Brown University shooter get into the building?

O'Hara said it was unknown how the suspected shooter entered the Barus and Holley Engineering Building at 184 Hope Street, but it is known that he exited the building onto Hope Street.

Is there only one shooter?

Law enforcement told the media that the information they have right now is that there is only one shooter. However, Smiley cautioned at the start of the press conference that it is a developing situation that may evolve.

What should you do if you might know something about the Brown University suspected shooter?

Smiley urged anything who may know anything about the shooter or the shooting to call 911, particularly if they are a student, or "an adult" on Brown University's campus.

Anyone with security cameras near the Barus and Holley building or on Hope Street, including residents and businesses, should review their camera footage to see if they captured anything around the time of the shooting, officials said.

Was a suspect in custody?

Smiley clarified that there was initial misinformation that a shooter was in custody.

He said the confusion was caused by the fact that they took someone into custody preliminarily. However, that person ended up not being the shooter and was released.

A shooter is not in custody.

This is a developing story.

Fear grips Congo's Uvira as M23 rebels take control, displacing 200,000

Uvira, CONGO (AP) — A climate of fear reigned Saturday in Uvira, a strategic city in easternCongo, days after it fell to theRwanda-backed M23 group, as fighting in the region escalated despite a U.S. mediated peace deal.

The Associated Press gained rare access to the city, which was the Congo government's last major foothold in South Kivu province after the provincial capital of Bukavu fell to the rebels in February. Its capture allows the rebels to consolidate a broad corridor of influence across the east.

M23 said it took control of Uvira earlier this week, following a rapid offensive launched at the start of the month. Along with the more than 400 people killed, about 200,000 have been displaced, regional officials say.

On Saturday, the situation in Uvira still had not returned to normal. There was absolute silence and no traffic, apart from military jeeps circulating on the empty streets. The banks were closed and people have not resumed their jobs — only a few dared to go out during the day, and no one ventured outside after sunset, with armed M23 fighters patrolling the city.

"Some people left the city, but we stayed," Maria Esther, a 45-year-old mother of 10, told AP. "But the situation hasn't returned to normal, we haven't resumed our usual activities because there's no money circulating."

Joli Bulambo, another resident of Uvira, said: "People thought that the situation that had happened in Goma with the deaths would be the same here in Uvira, but fortunately, there were not many deaths because God helped."

M23's latest push

The rebels'latest offensivecomes despite a U.S.-mediatedpeace agreement signed last weekby the Congolese and Rwandan presidents in Washington.

The United States accused Rwanda of violating the agreement by backing adeadly new rebel offensive in the mineral-rich eastern Congo, and warned that the Trump administration will take action against "spoilers" of the deal.

The accord didn't include the rebel group, which is negotiating separately with Congo and agreedearlier this year to a ceasefirethat both sides accuse the other of violating. However, it obliges Rwanda to halt support for armed groups like M23 and work to end hostilities.

Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, said on X on Saturday: "Rwanda's actions in eastern DRC are a clear violation of the Washington Accords signed by President Trump, and the United States will take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept."

There was no immediate reaction from Rwanda.

The rebels' advance pushed the conflict to the doorstep of neighboringBurundi, which has maintained troops in eastern Congo for years, heightening fears of a broader regional spillover.

A struggle for mineral rich territory

More than 100 armed groups are vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern Congo, near the border with Rwanda, most prominently M23. The conflict has created one of the world's most significant humanitarian crises, with more than 7 million people displaced, accordingto the U.N. agency for refugees.

Local U.N. partners report that more than 200,000 people have been displaced across the province since Dec. 2. Civilians also have crossed into Burundi, and there have been reports of shells falling in the town of Rugombo, on the Burundian side of the border, raising concerns about the conflict spilling over into Burundian territory.

Congo, the U.S. and U.N. experts accuse Rwanda of backing M23, which has grown from hundreds of members in 2021 to around 6,500 fighters, according to the U.N.

Rwanda, Congo and M23 trade accusations

Congo's Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner on Friday accused Rwanda of trampling on the peace agreement, which she described as bringing "hope of a historic turning point."

She warned, however, that the "entire process … is at stake," and urged the Security Council to impose sanctions against military and political leaders responsible for the attacks, ban mineral exports from Rwanda and prohibit it from contributing troops to U.N. peacekeeping missions.

"Rwanda continues to benefit, especially financially but also in terms of reputation, from its status as a troop-contributing country to peacekeeping missions," Wagner told AP.

Bertrand Bisimwa, deputy coordinator of the AFC/M23 rebel movement told AP in an exclusive interview Friday that peace commitments have remained largely theoretical. "Regardless of the ceasefire agreements we sign and the mutual commitments we make, nothing is implemented on the ground," he said.

Asked about the expansion of M23 operations toward the Uvira region, Bisimwa said the region was a long-standing hot spot of ethnic tensions and violence. "For a long time, people were attacked and killed because of their community affiliation," he said.

On Friday, Rwanda's Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe told diplomats that Congo had declared it would continue fighting in M23 recaptured territories and it was only after M23 retaliated that the international community "suddenly woke up."

"The DRC has openly declared that it would not observe any ceasefire and would instead continue fighting to recapture territories held by the AFC/M23, even as the peace process unfolded," he said.

While Rwanda denies the claim that it backs M23, it acknowledged last year that it has troops and missile systems in eastern Congo, allegedly to safeguard its security. U.N. experts estimate there are up to4,000 Rwandan forces in Congo.

Associated Press writers Ruth Alonga in Goma, Congo, and Evelyne Musambi in Nairobi, Kenya, contributed to this report.

Morgan Scalley promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach at Utah, succeeding Whittingham

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Morgan Scalley was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach at Utah on Saturday, succeeding Kyle Whittingham, who announced Fridayhe would step downafter 21 seasons.

Scalley will take over after No. 15 Utah plays Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31. He's been the defensive coordinator under Whittingham for 10 seasons and has been a part of the Utah coaching staff since 2007.

Utah ranks in the top 20 nationally this season in passing efficiency defense, total interceptions (14) and scoring defense (18.7 points per game).

"Being a part of the Utah football program was a childhood dream of mine that has turned into an incredible 25-year journey that I am blessed to say is continuing," Scalley said in a statement. "I have been mentored by some of the best men and coaches I could have ever asked for along the way and learned infinitely more than just X's and O's from them. I have also had the privilege of learning from and growing together with the amazing young men that have come through this program."

Scalley played safety for Utah from 2001 to 2004. Urban Meyer coached him over his final two seasons, and Scalley helped lead the Utes to the 2004 Fiesta Bowl and an undefeated season. He was the 2004 Mountain West co-Defensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-American.

Utah has gained a reputation for rugged, physical defensive play during Scalley's decade running the unit.

The Utes have finished in the top half of their conference in total defense nine times in the past 10 seasons. In 2019, Scalley's defense ranked second nationally and first in the Pac-12. The Utes also finished with the top rushing defense in the Pac-12 five times over Utah's final eight seasons in the conference.

"Morgan Scalley has proven over the course of his outstanding coaching and playing career at the University of Utah that he is uniquely equipped to take over as the program's next leader," athletic director Mark Harlan said in a statement. "He not only has great knowledge and perspective of what makes Utah football special, but his passion and love for the University of Utah position him to carry the mantle of leadership forward and continue the program's legacy of success."

High school kicker gets redemption during wild finish to Louisiana state football title game

TheLouisiana High School Athletic Association Division II Selectchampionship game on Friday night delivered one of the wildest endings to a football game you'll ever see.

Trailing 21-14 with 37 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, St. Charles scored a touchdown and were about to tie the game. But the extra point by kicker Tyler Milioto hooked left, keeping Archbishop Shaw up 21-20 and on the cusp of a second straight state title.

Archbishop Shaw recovered the onside kick and with St. Charles having only two timeouts remaining, the game appeared over. But after the first kneel-down, Archbishop Shaw's center took off his helmet to celebrate prematurely, prompting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which stopped the clock.

St. Charles used its final two timeouts after the next two kneel-downs, bringing up fourth down. With 20 seconds to play, Archbishop Shaw was forced to punt.

The punt didn't go as planned and traveled only eight yards, giving St. Charles life with 16 seconds to play, down a point and taking over possession on Archbishop Shaw's 32-yard line. A five-yard completion where the receiver got out of bounds set up a title-winning field-goal opportunity and a chance at redemption for Milioto.

With a second chance, Milioto stepped up and drilled a 44-yard field goal to put St. Charles up 23-21 and seal the state title.

"I wasn't really feeling anything because I said that it can't get much worse than what just happened," said Milioto, via GeauxPreps.com. "I saw it go in, and I don't remember what happened afterward."

The state title completes a turnaround year for St. Charles, who finished 13-1 this season after posting a 4-7 record last year. It's also the school's fourth state championship in program history and first since 2022.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, left, and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

Jared Goffdoesn't think about it much anymore.

"It feels like a long time ago," he told Detroit reporters this week.

Matthew Staffordhinted at the same during his weekly availability with Los Angeles reporters.

It's been nearly five years since theRams sent Goff, two first-round draft picks and a third-round pick to the Detroit Lions in ablockbuster trade for Stafford. But as much as the two star quarterbacks — and former No. 1 picks in the draft — would like to politely leave it be, they forever will be linked in the greater football consciousness.

"It wasn't an easy transition for anybody," Stafford said. "You're moving across the country. Your families are moving across the country, all those kind of things. You're going to a new team, doing all of that.

"So I've got a ton of respect for him. And hopefully he feels the same way towards me."

On Sunday at SoFi Stadium, Stafford and Goff will duel for the fourth time. The Rams beat the Lions at SoFi Stadium in 2021, but theLions defeated the Ramsin the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs two seasons later at Ford Field and then beat them again in the same stadium in the2024 season opener.

Who got the best end of the deal?

Stafford, 37, led the Rams to victory in Super Bowl LVI in his first season and is on the verge of helping them clinch a playoff berth for the fourth time in five seasons with a performance that has made him a front-runner to win hisfirst most valuable player award.

Goff, 31, has led the Lions to two playoff appearances, including the NFC championship game in 2023, and twice has been voted to the Pro Bowl.

So both have thrived. And this season they are statistically close.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford passes during a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 16.

Stafford has completed 288 of 432 passes for 3,354 yards and a league-best 35 touchdowns with four interceptions. Goff has completed 289 of 412 passes for 3,334 yards and 26 touchdowns with five interceptions.

The Rams (10-3) hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC and can clinch a playoff spot with a victory Sunday. The Lions (8-5) are battling for a playoff spot in the NFC North, chasing the No. 2-seeded Green Bay Packers (9-3-1) and the No. 7 Chicago Bears (9-4).

"Jared's played really great,"Rams coach Sean McVaysaid. "I've been truly happy to see what he's done and how he's really put that team on his back and done such a great job of being able to build."

Goff, of course, is in Detroit because McVay grew frustrated with him near the conclusion of the 2020 season — which ended with a divisional-round loss to the Packers — and Stafford became available after 12 seasons with the Lions.

Nearly half a decade has passed. But when asked about Goff, McVay does not miss an opportunity to remorsefully reference the clunky, impersonal wayhe handled the quarterback's exitfrom Los Angeles.

"I've been very open and very clear about [how] I had a lot of growing up to do back when that thing went down," McVay said. "There were a lot of great memories and a lot of really good ball that he did here that I'll always cherish. I'm truly happy for him. He's married and has a beautiful little girl now. It's awesome to see.

"I think I'm reminded of those things and then you're also reminded of when you need to be able to grow up and handle things a little bit better. I'll never run away from that."

Goff said he no longer feels an emotional charge when he plays against the Rams, citing the playoff game and last season's opener.

"So now it's even further removed," he said.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff passes.

Stafford apparently feels the same about the Lions.

"When I flip the tape on, I don't think about all the guys that I used to play with," he said, "because hardly any of them are still playing on the team."

Stafford said he follows many quarterbacks in the NFL, Goff among them.

"They've had a ton of success since he's been there," Stafford said. "He's been a great part of that. I think he does as good a job as anybody getting the ball to his playmakers and letting those guys work."

Goff also has monitored Stafford.

"He's doing a good job," Goff said. "And we do get some crossover tape here and there, and he's one of those guys you like to watch on tape."

After the game, as per custom in the NFL, the quarterbacks will seek out each other. The exchanges between Stafford and Goff have included "a ton of mutual respect," Stafford said.

"The last couple times we played him, it's been great battles all the way down to the end," Stafford said. "He's made some plays to help him win the game and shoot, I tip my cap to him."
